Tyson to fight Lewis in April

Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Mike Tyson will challenge heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis on April 6 in the MGM Grand at Las Vegas.

Lewis and Tyson will meet twice in 2002 because of a clause in their fight contract. The second fight likely will happen in October somewhere in the United States.

"It makes sense for a re-match from a business and sporting sense," fight agent Jerome Anderson told BBC Radio. "It is fair to say this will be the biggest fight income of all time. The figures will be high."

Tyson last fought for a title at the MGM Grand on June 28, 1997, when he was disqualified for biting WBA champion Evander Holyfield's ears.

The fight will be a WBC mandatory title defense for Lewis. Tyson is the WBC's No. 1-ranked contender.

Lewis regained the WBC and IBF titles on a fourth-round knockout of Hasim Rahman in a rematch on Nov. 17 at Las Vegas.

The pay-per-view bout will be a joint venture of HBO and Showtime. HBO has a contract with Lewis, while Showtime has a deal with Tyson.

A victory for Tyson would make him a heavyweight champion for the third time. Only Muhammad Ali, Evander Holyfield and Lewis have won at least a piece of the title at least three times.
