Tyson says he never wanted to be normal

ESPN.com

Mike Tyson never fails to put on some kind of a show, be it a fierce display of fighting skills or a sideshow performance that has observers wondering if he needs psychiatric help.

Apparently, Tyson himself wonders those same things. In a Sunday Conversation with ESPN's Jeremy Schaap, the former heavyweight champion expounds on what it's like to be a fighter, saying, "we're not normal."

He also says he didn't prepare properly for his last bout with current champion Lennox Lewis, who pounded Tyson last June in the highest-grossing pay-per-view event in history.

For his next fight, against Clifford Etienne next week at The Pyramid in Memphis, Tyson says he wants to "purge the ring with blood."

That's the kind of talk we've become accustomed to hearing from Iron Mike. Here are some other offerings from the interview:

  • Where do you rate Lennox Lewis among the great heavyweights? Well, he's a big-time fighter. There's no doubt about it, but I'm not finished yet. Until it's over, even when I do beat him, he's gonna be a big-time fighter. But I'm just looking forward to putting my mark in the heavyweight division.

  • Where would you rate Mike Tyson among the heavyweights? I don't know, I'm just happy to be remembered. I'm just glad I gave people some interesting times. I won't say all fun, but interesting.

  • Is that how you look at it? I'm a pretty interesting person so I always keep everything I do in life from an interesting perspective.

  • How do you see the Mike Tyson story ending? I don't know. I'm gonna live forever; I've got a lot going on, you know. Whatever happens good or bad we write our own book. If I want it to be good, it'd be good, if I want it to be disastrous, it'd be disastrous. It looks like it's going to be good. I look forward to hanging out with my kids and working on how to understand with Monica.

The divorce is still new. She's giving me a hard time about everything right now, but it'll be all right, I believe. Down the line everything shall pass they say, the hard feelings and everything, but it's really a great learning experience in life that someone could love you one minute and be willing to kill you the next. What a splendid web we spinned, huh?
