LAS VEGAS -- If HBO and a venue with deep pockets can scrape up $10 million to $15 million to pay Roy Jones Jr. to fight Antonio Tarver again, fight fans will be treated to a rematch -- the best possible fight that can be made in the light heavyweight division -- but it isn't likely.

Jones, who regained his WBC light heavyweight title with a majority decision win in a surprisingly competitive fight with Tarver, is looking past the light heavyweight division and the whims of diehard fight fans. If the 34-year-old fighter, who began to show his age versus Tarver, ever fights again, it will be against former heavyweight champ Mike Tyson in a mega-event.

"It's a very real possibility," Jones told MaxBoxing.com after his tough fight with Tarver.

However, that dream match is also unlikely to happen. Although Jones holds the WBA heavyweight title, which could be a lure for Tyson, Don King has options on promoting any defense of that belt that Jones might make. Tyson and King are currently in a bitter $100 million lawsuit against each other, and Tyson has stated repeatedly that he will never fight for the controversial promoter again.

Not that a Jones-Tyson match would need a "world title" or a promoter to garner 2 million pay-per-view buys. Both fighters have mainstream name recognition to go along with a contrast in styles, and their disparity in weight and hand speed would make an intriguing heavyweight match.

It all depends on Tyson, who had to be talked into fighting Clifford Etienne in February and hasn't fought since. Tyson has had a scuffle outside of the ropes, and he's signed a contract to fight in a kickboxing organization since stopping Etienne in one round, but he hasn't been spotted anywhere near a boxing gym since the beginning of the year.

Jones doesn't care about all of that. He says he has been in direct contact with Tyson, and the 34-year-old champ believes the fight can be made and put on by spring.

"I'm 85 percent sure that this fight can happen," Jones said. "We would try to make it for April of 2004 at either the SuperDome in New Orleans or Madison Square Garden in New York City."

And what about Tarver, who was able to land enough punches Saturday night to swell up the left side of the four-division champ's face? What about James Toney, a former middleweight rival of Jones who has recently emulated his success at heavyweight?

"Maybe [Toney] can fight Tarver," Jones said glibly at Saturday's post-fight press conference. "[Tarver] needs something to do."
