After mulling options, Pitino chooses Louisville

SPECIAL TO ESPN.COM

Louisville athletics director Tom Jurich deserves a big-time salute. He did an amazing job selling Rick Pitino on Louisville. Congrats to the school for locking up the hottest name available in college coaching.

Pitino is a winner, a bona-fide motivator and teacher who will do a great job bringing Louisville back to national basketball prominence.

Michigan made a gallant effort to lure Pitino, but Rick's familiarity with the Louisville program gave AD Tom Jurich a big edge.
Jurich minimized the effect of a possible backlash from Kentucky fans. That was the only drawback that led to any hesitation by Pitino concerning the Louisville position. With all the positives of the Louisville program, Pitino accepted the job. He loves the city of Louisville and is excited about the challenge he faces, replacing Hall of Famer Denny Crum.

Rick has told me on numerous occasions that he has tremendous respect for the Louisville fans. He also stressed that he has such respect and warm feelings for Jurich and school president John Shumaker. Rick said both men made him feel comfortable and wanted him to be the leader of the Cardinals' program.

There is a special passion in the city for basketball. There will be over 20,000 fans supporting the Cardinals on a regular basis.

There were other pluses. Rick loves the Valhalla Country Club, where he is a member. He loves Churchill Downs and has many friends in the area. They all played a role in his decision to accept the Louisville job.

Michigan made a gallant effort. Athletics director Bill Martin tried but entered the fray late. Rick's familiarity with the Louisville program gave Jurich a big edge.

The challenge is now on ... Louisville vs. Kentucky! I can't wait for that matchup, baby! I can't wait to be there at courtside. It should be even more special now with Tubby vs. Rick! The state will be rocking big-time with basketball mania.
