The race for prized 6-foot-10 recruit Shavlik Randolph has been heating up.

	6-10 standout Shavlik Randolph (42) has a good basketball pedigree.

While the teams on Tobacco Road are prominent -- Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State -- Billy Donovan and Florida are also in the picture. There had even been some talk about Randolph going to the pros.

In fact, I believe Duke and Florida are now the two front-runners.

Randolph is rated as the nation's premier high school player by recruiting guru Bob Gibbons. Randolph's grandfather, Ronnie Shavlik, still holds a number of N.C. State records.

If Duke can land Randolph, it would give coach Mike Krzyzewski an incredible recruiting class. The Blue Devils have already landed a great wing shooter in 6-5 J. J. Redick from Virginia, a 6-10 big man in Michael Thompson, a 6-2 playmaker from Chicago in Sean Dockery, and 6-8 Lee Melchionni.

Florida has already assembled an impressive class too: 6-7 Mario Boggan can be a factor up front, 6-4 Matt Walsh from Pennsylvania can flat-out shoot, and 6-2 point guard Anthony Roberson from Michigan is one of the nation's top playmakers.

Matt Doherty has put together a dynamite backcourt tandem. North Carolina has commitments from Rashad McCants and Raymond Felton.

The race for Randolph is on and should get interesting. Stay tuned.
