  • The first U.S. high school player to be selected in the NHL Entry Draft was center Jay North of Bloomington-Jefferson High (Minn.) in 1980. North was taken by the Buffalo Sabres, 62nd overall.

  • Center Bob Carpenter of St. John's Prep (Mass.) was the first U.S. high school player to be selected in the first round, when he was taken third overall by Washington in 1981.

  • Brian Lawton of Mount St. Charles High (R.I.) was the first U.S. high school player to be selected first overall, when the Minnesota North Stars chose the teen in 1983.
