Stowers, 17, dies two days after collapsing

Associated Press

INDIANAPOLIS -- Just hours after the death of NFL star Korey Stringer from heat exhaustion, an Indiana high school football player died Wednesday, two days after he collapsed during practice.

Officials at Clinton Central High School, 30 miles north of Indianapolis, said junior Travis Stowers, 17, apparently died from a brain aneurysm.

"Doctors told us it was not heat-caused," athletic director Linda Barnett said. "It was a blood vessel leaking in his brain, and that's what caused his body temperature to rise."

Stowers, a 6-foot, 220-pound offensive lineman, became wobbly and fell to his knees during practice Monday afternoon, the first day of non-contact drills. He was treated by the team's trainer and later taken by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

His death occurred about 5 a.m. ET, some three hours after Stringer died in a Mankato, Minn., hospital.

An autopsy was planned for Stowers later Wednesday, Barnett said.

She said he had no previous health problems school officials were aware of and that he had not complained of feeling ill before he collapsed.

Monday's highs were in the 90s with heavy humidity, and players took water breaks every 10 minutes, she said.

The football team learned of Stowers' death when they gathered for practice Wednesday morning, Barnett said.

In Indianapolis, Ben Davis High School sophomore Justin Smith, 16, a reserve lineman, also was taken to Methodist Hospital after he became dehydrated during practice Wednesday morning, coach Dick Dullaghan said.

"He didn't really collapse. He walked into the training room from the field and said he was feeling nauseated, which is the first sign," Dullaghan said. "They took care of him and felt like it was necessary for him to be transported to the hospital because he needed to have an IV."

Dullaghan said Smith's condition did not appear serious.

"He was pretty good before he left the school," the coach said.
