The Kentucky Derby winner breezed through five furlongs in a brisk 59 seconds at Churchill Downs on Monday, the second-fastest time among 30 horses at that distance.

"He worked well," trainer Neil Drysdale said. "It was just a little quicker than we anticipated, but he was working well within himself."

Drysdale said Fusaichi Pegasus has been looking good after the Derby, showing no signs of wear after his impressive victory.

"He had very minimal weight loss and he looks well. His coat looks well, so I'm pretty happy with his condition," Drysdale said.

Fusaichi Pegasus, the son of Mr. Prospector, will be sent to Pimlico Race Course on Wednesday after training that morning. Drysdale said the colt was scheduled to walk or trot Tuesday.

Las Vegas Sports Consultants has made the horse a 1-2 favorite in Saturday's race. Red Bullet is next at 5-1.

After enjoying surprise success Saturday with Golden Missile in the Pimlico Special, trainer Joe Orseno hopes to pull off another upset in the Preakness with well-rested Red Bullet.

"Let's face it, the hype is over Pegasus because he won the Derby," Orseno said Monday. "The excitement is over a potential Triple Crown winner, and the excitement for me is upsetting the Triple Crown winner and making the world mad at me."

Orseno wants to become the first trainer to saddle both the winner of the Pimlico Special and the Preakness on successive weekends. In 1996, Nick Zito scored with Star Standard and then won the Preakness with Louis Quatorze.

The prospective Preakness field lost a horse Monday, but likely gained another in its place.

Wheelaway trainer John Kimmel opted against entering the Derby's fifth-place finisher, saying, "After conferring with the owners, it was decided to skip the Preakness and get the horse ready for the Belmont Stakes."

Impeachment, which took third in the Derby, will likely make the trip to Baltimore. Trainer Todd Pletcher said he would make a decision on the horse after a workout at Belmont Park.
