| Pedro Martinez. Without a doubt, Pedro is the most dominating player in the game. He's also possibly the most dominant pitcher in the game ever.
Carl Roder Fairless Hills, Pa. Vladimir Guerrero. Although Alex Rodriguez is an excellent player, I don't believe he would perform as well as Guerrero on a team like Montreal. If the two players switched teams I believe that Guerrero would have far superior numbers. I do agree that A-Rod's offensive abilities at shortstop are rare while Guerrero's as an outfielder are not. Regardless of this I believe that A-Rod will be a great player in the future, but Guerrero will be superior. Mischa Makortoff Coquitlam, British Columbia I would without a doubt pick Derek Jeter simply for the grace with which he has handled a high-profile spot on baseball's highest-profile team. There have been times when others may have outproduced him with the bat or made fewer errors, but I have a hard time believing that anyone has been more consistent all around, or provided the quiet leadership that Jeter has. Adam Tait Provo, Utah I'd have to say with Pudge Rodriguez. Pedro Martinez can only help you win once every four or five days, but Pudge is the best player at his position and he is so young. Plus, the odds of having a catcher of his stature in any lifetime is next to none. He is probably one of the top three players at his position of all time. No other active player can even come close to saying that. He has the power, a gun of an arm, good speed, great intelligence, and is simply a great ball player. Greg Schiller Washington, D.C. I would have to choose Andrew Jones. I think he is finally coming around at the plate. Put that together with his great defense in center field, and you have an MVP-type player. Mark my words, in the next few years he will be right up there with the big names like Alex Rodriguez and Vladimir Guerrero. John Taylor San Francisco If I had to build a team around one player, I would build it around Alex Rodriguez. A-Rod is still a very young player, and he's already the best offensive shortstop in the majors. His power and new-found patience at the plate give him an edge over Vladimir Guerrero, who would be my second choice. Too bad for pitchers, hey. Ryan Vachon New London, Conn. Pedro Martinez. He dominates like few ever have. Despite being injured, he put a hurting on Cleveland and New York last during last year's postseason. He never gets hit really hard. Batters start thinking about him days before they have to face him. His ERA, walk-to-strikeout ratio and bulldog face are the stuff of legends. Joshua Harris Saxtons River, Vt. Alex Rodriguez. To me he is the best all around player in the game. The guy is a great fielder with awesome range and also hits for power and average. Finally, the he steals bases and produces runs. Ken Gurney Cleveland A-Rod is an absolutely wonderful player. But I'd still go with Vladimir Guerrero. Having watched Vlad play numerous times already, you can tell this guy is only now beginning to realize his enormous potential. Though A-Rod is two or three years from traditional baseball peak age, you get the sense that what he's doing now is pretty close to the finished product. I believe Guerrero still has plenty of room to grow. Jonah Keri Los Angeles As the Red Sox will vouch for, Pedro Martinez is clearly the guy to start a franchise with. Any GM worth his salt will tell you to take the game's best pitcher over the game's best player, despite the potential for injury. Pedro Martinez makes a .500 team, a 96-win team all by himself. Ted Whitesell Boston A-Rod is by far the most dangerous player out there. He has been one of the few to come into the league at a very young age and produce immediately. Playing second fiddle for so long to Junior Griffey, he did not need to be concerned with leadership. Now that the M's are his team (for now), he's shown he can carry a club. He simply does not have any flaws in his game. George Szalankiewicz Santa Monica, Calif. With a doubt, it would have to be Pedro Martinez. The way he can dominate a game and get in the heads of opposing batters is amazing. Just look at what he did to the Indians last year in the playoffs. Before he stepped out from the bullpen, Cleveland knew the game was over. Rob Standley Richmond, Va. I would choose a top-flight position player to build my team around. And my choice would be Nomar Garciaparra, who is great at everything he does. He's a great hitter, a tremendous fielding, and he has very good leadership skills, which a team being built from the ground up would need.
