ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ The Cleveland Indians waited until the ninth inning to upstage the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The defending AL Central champions scored four times in their final at-bat Thursday to overcome a two-run deficit and homers by Greg Vaughn and Jose Canseco to beat the Devil Rays 7-5.

Russell Branyan and Matt Nokes delivered RBI singles off Rick White to wipe out Tampa Bay's 5-3 lead, then Mark Whiten put the Indians ahead for good with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

Alex Ramirez finished the rally with a run-scoring single off White, who allowed four runs, four hits and walked two in two-thirds of an inning.

Vaughn, the Devil Rays' big free agent acquisition this winter, homered off Bobby Witt with one on in the second for his first extra-base hit and RBIs this spring. Canseco hit a solo shot, this third, off Ricardo Rincon in the eighth to put Tampa Bay up 5-3.

Mark Watson allowed two hits in the ninth, but worked out of the jam to get the save for Cleveland. Manny Ramirez drove in a run with a double and David Justice had a run-scoring single for the single.

The Devil Rays are promoting a power-laden lineup, bolstered by the offseason acquisitions of Vaughn and Vinny Castilla, as ``The Hit Show.'' Castilla sat out Thursday with a strained rib cage, however Vaughn, Canseco and Fred McGriff went 3-for-9 with three RBIs and three runs scored.

John Burkett allowed two runs on three hits in four innings, while Bryan Rekar yielded six hits _ but just one run _ in three innings for the Devil Rays. ^Notes: Devil Rays LHP Wilson Alvarez, bothered by shoulder tightness, threw on the side for the second straight day and felt fine. He'll rest Friday before throwing again on Saturday ... Castilla will test his sore rib cage in batting practice Friday ... Indians RHP Dave Burba, slowed by a sore hamstring since March 14, pitched four innings in an intrsquad game. He threw 60 pitches and allowed no runs, two hits and two walks, while striking out five.
