JUPITER, Fla. (AP) _ Mark McGwire homered in his third consecutive game and Larry Sutton hit a grand slam homer Thursday as the St. Louis Cardinals pounded the Florida Marlins 16-0.

McGwire hit one of his characteristic towering shots over the left field wall in the third inning with Edgar Renteria on base. This followed a single to right by McGwire in the first inning that also scored Renteria.

McGwire grounded out to lead off the three-run fifth and for the game he was 2-for-3, raising his springtime batting average to .382 in 13 games. He has 16 runs batted in and has four homers after a slow start earlier this month.

Sutton replaced McGwire in the field and rapped his sixth consecutive hit in the sixth, a single to right. The streak ended when he flied to short left with the bases loaded for the first out in the Cardinals five-run seventh, then he unloaded a grand slam into right field

The game also marked the spring debut of Eric Davis in right field for the Cardinals.

``It felt pretty good to get back out there,'' Davis said. ``It's been a long time since June,'' when he was put on the disabled list with a strained left shoulder. ``I just have to be careful reaching across my body with my left hand to make a play. Now, it's a matter of playing and getting into a groove.''

Darryl Kile started and pitched six shutout innings for the Cardinals, striking out two and giving up two singles. He retired 15 consecutive batters after Marlins' leadoff batter Luis Castillo was wiped out on a double play in the first.
