RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

BALTIMORE (AP) -- Delino DeShields singled in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Baltimore Orioles stretched their winning streak to four by defeating the Detroit Tigers 2-1 Saturday.

The Orioles trailed 1-0 in the eighth before coming back. Mike Bordick scored both runs for Baltimore, which used solid pitching to win after scoring 31 runs in its previous three games.

Bordick led off the 10th with a single off Doug Brocail (0-1) and took second on a sacrifice. DeShields then dumped a single to left and Bordick slid into the plate an instant before the throw from Bobby Higginson.

A sudden shower in the eighth inning scattered the crowd of 42,547, many of whom had left by the time the game ended.

Al Reyes (1-0) stranded the potential tiebreaking run at second base in the ninth and 10th.

Rob Fick singled in a fourth-inning run and Brad Ausmus had three hits for the Tigers, who have lost four straight.

Detroit starter Hideo Nomo yielded four hits and two walks in seven shutout innings. He struck out five and allowed only runner past second base, but his superb effort was undone when Brocail allowed Baltimore to pull even in the eighth.

Bodick led off with a single and took second on a sacrifice. After first baseman Tony Clark made a diving grab of a liner by DeShields, B.J. Surhoff hit an RBI single.

Baltimore ace Mike Mussina scattered 10 hits over eight innings, working out of trouble on several occasions. But his lone walk cost him dearly.

Dean Palmer drew a leadoff walk in the fourth, took second on a groundout and scored on a two-out single by Fick, who walked to the plate with a .154 batting average and no RBIs.

The teams combined for nine homers and 24 runs one night earlier, but this game featured fine pitching and outstanding defense. Palmer made a nifty backhand stab at third to start a double play in the sixth, and Higginson dived to his left to rob Baltimore's Harold Baines of a double in the seventh.

For the most part, Nomo shackled the Orioles while Mussina got the big out when it counted.

After the Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the seventh, Detroit manager Phil Garner sent Juan Gonzalez in as a pinch-hitter. Gonzalez, sidelined since opening day with a strained hamstring, hit into a 6-4-3 double play.

Detroit got runners on second and third with no outs in the eighth but failed to add to their 1-0 lead.

Nomo's biggest jam came in the third. Charles Johnson hit a leadoff single and reached third with two outs before Surhoff was thrown out on a tapper in front of the plate.

Notes: Baltimore's Cal Ripken got the day off and remained at 2,994 hits for his career. He will continue his drive to reach 3,000 on Sunday. ... Orioles CF Brady Anderson had a throwing error in the eighth, his first of the season. He had one error last season. ... Ausmus has six hits in the first two games of the series. ... Baltimore (4-1) moved three games over .500 for the first time since Sept. 17, 1998.
