PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Mike Piazza wasn't happy with his pitch selection, but he had no complaints with the result.

Piazza's tiebreaking, RBI double with two outs in the ninth inning helped the New York Mets snap a four-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night.

"You don't like to be swinging at that," Piazza said. "He threw a lot of nasty pitches. Fortunately, I was able to stay on it."

Payton barely beat Mickey Morandini's relay throw from left fielder Ron Gant to score the winning run.

Mets manager Bobby Valentine credited third-base coach Cookie Rojas for the victory for sending Payton on Piazza's gapper.

"That was a great send," Valentine said. "Cookie has been there a long time and he knows when to take a chance."

Payton said he didn't think he'd score when he saw Gant cut the ball off.

"When Cookie saw the relay throw, he was able to send me in stride," Payton said.

Dennis Cook (2-0) got Rico Brogna to pop out with two runners on in the eighth. Armando Benitez pitched the ninth for his third save and Rick Reed had his third straight strong outing.

Reed allowed one run and four hits in seven innings and drove in New York's first run with a sacrifice fly as the Mets ended a six-game losing streak at Veterans Stadium. Reed pitched despite losing feeling in his right foot from the second inning on.

"It was numb. I don't know why," Reed said. "I thought it was because I tied my shoe too tight. I took it off and retied it. It could've been the cold. I changed socks once and sat next to the heater."

The Phillies tied it at 1 when Mike Lieberthal hit Reed's first pitch in the seventh just over the left-field wall.

Reed's sacrifice fly scored Derek Bell to give the Mets a 1-0 lead in the fourth. Bell led off with a single. Benny Agbayani and Rey Ordonez drew one-out walks to load the bases before Reed hit the first pitch to center.

Randy Wolf solidified his spot in Philadelphia's rotation with his second straight strong outing. The left-hander allowed one run and five hits while walking six and striking out seven in seven innings.

"I'm bitter about walking Ordonez," Wolf said. "If I don't walk him, they don't score."

Ordonez, who is just 1-for-24 this season, walked three times, including a two-out walk that also loaded the bases in the second. But Reed struck out to end that threat.

"That was a real big at-bat," Valentine said of Ordonez' fourth-inning walk. "He wasn't getting any strikes and saw the ball well."

Ordonez kept the Phillies off the scoreboard with a nice play on a sharp, one-hopper to shortstop by Brogna with two outs and runners on first and second in the sixth. Ordonez dove slightly to his left, short-hopped the liner and forced Scott Rolen at second.

Reed was also helped by excellent defense the previous inning as Bell made a pair of diving catches on consecutive plays.

Todd Zeile became the first Mets runner to get thrown out stealing when he was picked off with one out in the sixth. The Mets had been 7-for-7. ... Rolen went 0-for-2 against Reed and is 1-for-16 against him in his career. His eight-game hitting streak came to an end. ... Agbayani started his first game of the season as the struggling Rickey Henderson got a day off. He went 0-for-3 and misplayed a bloop double by Brogna in the second. ... Melvin Mora got his second career start at third base in place of Robin Ventura, who has been bothered by a tender right ankle.
