Orioles, Devil Rays rework rotations for series

  GAME UPDATE | GAME LOG

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A steady rain forced the postponement of Monday night's game between the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

The game will be made up June 8 at 3:05 p.m.

Both managers reworked their starting rotation in the wake of the rainout.

Dave Eiland (0-0, 10.80 ERA), the scheduled starter for Tampa Bay on Monday, will be skipped in the rotation. Steve Trachsel will start on Tuesday night and Ryan Rupe will pitch Wednesday, Devil Rays manager Larry Rothschild said.

Pat Rapp, the Orioles' scheduled starter on Monday, will instead pitch Tuesday and ace Mike Mussina will work Wednesday. But the rainout enables Baltimore manager Mike Hargrove to skip Jose Mercedes in Oakland on Friday and instead use No. 2 starter Sidney Ponson.

It's the first rainout this season for the Orioles, who planned to honor third baseman Cal Ripken for his 3,000th hit in a brief ceremony before the game. Ripken reached the milestone Saturday in Minnesota.

After the postponement the Orioles shuffled their roster. Closer Mike Timlin and catcher Greg Myers, who have yet to play this season, were activated from the 15-day disabled list.

To make room on the roster, right-handed reliever Gabe Molina was optioned to Triple-A Rochester and catcher Willie Morales was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a hyperextended elbow.

"It's been bothering him for a while," Hargrove said. "The doctor recommended he go on the DL."

Timlin was placed on the disabled list retroactive to April 2 with an abdominal strain. The right-hander had not pitched since the team's last exhibition game April 1 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Hargrove said he expected Timlin, who had 27 saves last year, to bolster a bullpen that has struggled in his absence.

"He'll be a one-inning closer," said Hargrove. "There may be times when we'll run him out there for a hitter or two in the eighth inning. ... Hopefully, the first couple of times we'll have the luxury of running him out there for a batter or two with the game not on the line."

Molina pitched in one game, allowing three runs in one inning.

Myers suffered a pulled hamstring in the April 1 exhibition game when his spikes got caught as he was hitting a home run. He was placed on the disabled list the following day.
