GAME LOG
NEW YORK (AP) -- Melvin Mora had never hit a regular-season home run in the majors. Still, he found nothing unusual about his game-winning shot in the 10th inning Thursday night. "When I was in Triple-A, I hit a lot of them," Mora said. Mora's one-out home run gave the Mets a 5-4 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers for a three-game sweep. New York won its fourth in a row, and beat the Brewers for the eighth straight time. Mora emerged as a late-season hero for the Mets last year, and even hit a home run in the NLCS against Atlanta. Against the Brewers, his drive over the center-field fence against Curtis Leskanic (0-1) came in his 53rd at-bat in the majors. "I've seen him hit them in batting practice," teammate Derek Bell said.. "But when he hit that one, I said, 'Wow.' " Mora hit 31 home runs in the minors in 2,057 at-bats. The Mets are 16-3 against the Brewers since Milwaukee joined the NL in 1998. "I can't deal with what's in the past," Brewers manager Davey Lopes said. "I didn't think they outpitched us or outplayed us." Turk Wendell (1-0), the fourth Mets pitcher, pitched a hitless 10th for the victory. Mike Piazza homered over the left-center field bleachers for the Mets. Bell hit a leadoff homer in the seventh that started a three-run rally that tied it at 4, and also doubled. Charlie Hayes, cut by the Mets in spring training, had a home run, double and single for the Brewers. James Mouton homered for Milwaukee, and was later involved in a collision that caused shortstop Mark Loretta to leave the game. Mouton ran in from left field and knocked into Loretta on Rickey Henderson's foul fly in the sixth. Loretta caught the ball to end the inning, and both players fell to the ground. Mouton stayed in the game, but Loretta left and was diagnosed with dizziness and slight disorientation. He was listed a day-to-day. Brewers starter Steve Woodard took a 4-1 lead into the seventh. After Bell homered, Edgardo Alfonzo followed with a single and Piazza walked on four pitches. Valerio de Los Santos retired Robin Ventura on a force play, and David Weathers relieved. Todd Zeile hit an RBI single and when right fielder Jeromy Burnitz's throw to third soared into the stands, Ventura scored the tying run. Burnitz hit a sacrifice fly in the first off Al Leiter. Mouton broke a 1-1 tie with his first homer of the season, a two-run shot in the third on which he broke his bat off at the handle. Piazza hit his fourth home run, a long shot in the second.
