Angels send Tigers to eighth straight loss

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Scott Spiezio hit two solo homers and Mo Vaughn had a home run and two doubles Monday night as the Anaheim Angels handed the Detroit Tigers their eighth consecutive loss, 10-4.

Detroit manager Phil Garner, hitting coach Bill Madlock and third base coach Doug Mansolino all were ejected.

Mansolino was thrown out in the third inning for arguing with third base umpire Fieldin Culbreth. Garner and Madlock were tossed for comments made to plate umpire Bill Welke after the Tigers batted in the sixth.

Vaughn drove in four runs and Tim Salmon also homered for the Angels. Salmon's two-run shot in the opening inning, his fourth homer, put the Angels in front to stay.

Ken Hill (2-3) gave up three runs, two earned, and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. Coming off two losses when he gave up a total of 15 earned runs on 16 hits over seven innings, Hill struck out four and walked three to earn the win.

Dave Mlicki (0-4) was rocked for eight runs, seven earned, in five-plus innings. He allowed 11 hits, including four homers.

Spiezio, who made his major league debut with Oakland in 1996, had just one multiple-homer game previously, on Aug. 18, 1998, for the Athletics against Toronto.

The two homers also matched Spiezio's season total going into the game.

Detroit has given up seven or more runs in the last eight games and is off to a 4-14 start in its first year under Garner.

Vaughn hit a leadoff homer in the fifth, his fourth of the year, to extend Anaheim's lead to 7-3. Spiezio led off the sixth with his second homer, and Vaughn hit a two-run double to put the Angels into double digits just one game after they were shut out 1-0 at Tampa Bay.

Detroit's Juan Gonzalez hit his third homer, a solo shot, off Hill in the fifth.

Angels shortstop Gary DiSarcina, sidelined since April 9 by a bruised left thumb hurt trying to make a diving catch, was activated earlier in the day. He started, had a two-run single in the fourth, and made several good fielding plays, including a shoe-top grab of Gregg Jefferies' hard liner in the third inning.

Game notes
Garner said speculation that Gonzalez will spend just one year with the Tigers hasn't proven a distraction. "I've had no indication whatsoever that he is unhappy and doesn't want to be here," Garner said. ... Tigers third baseman Dean Palmer was scratched from the lineup because of tightness in his lower back, which he experienced during batting practice. ... Angels right-hander Tim Belcher, coming back from arm surgery in the offseason, is scheduled to start for Vancouver on Tuesday night against Calgary. ... Detroit infielder Damion Easley, who suffered a broken bone in his right hand when hit by a pitch April 5, was examined by a specialist Monday and was told that playing will not aggravate the injury. Easley then homered his first time up in a rehab appearance with Toledo.
