Suspensions overshadow win

CHICAGO (AP) -- Jose Valentin has to do something about his timing.

Valentin hit for the cycle Thursday and drove in five runs as the Chicago White Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 13-4. But he did it just minutes after baseball announced the suspensions for last weekend's brawl at Comiskey Park between the White Sox and the Detroit Tigers.

Jose Valentin
Jose Valentin said his day was unforgettable, even if the club didn't reward him with a Harley.
And after spending his first eight seasons in Milwaukee, where a player gets a Harley-Davidson for hitting for the cycle, Valentin did it in a White Sox uniform.

"Here, I just get my congratulations from my teammates," he said, laughing. "Somebody did put a little bike in my locker. But I'm happy to do it here with the White Sox.

"It's a day I'm never going to forget."

The White Sox won't, either. Sixteen members of the White Sox and Tigers were suspended for a total of 82 games, and nine others were fined for Saturday's bench-clearing brawls, which resulted in 11 ejections.

Managers Phil Garner and Jerry Manuel were suspended for eight games each. Detroit coach Juan Samuel, seen throwing punches, got the longest suspension, 15 games.

"I'm surprised Jerry Manuel got eight games. ... I know the type of person he is. If anything, he was trying to create some peace as quick as he could," White Sox general manager Ron Schueler said. "Phil, on the other hand, I thought he got a little more active. I'm not sure he was trying to separate everybody. I think he was engaging at some point. So yeah, I'm surprised they both got the same."

Manuel said he was surprised at the length of his suspension -- the first of his career -- but wasn't going to argue with it. Besides, he was more concerned about Chicago's victory, its eighth in nine games.

"My day was good," Manuel said, smiling. "We won another ballgame."

And Valentin played a big part in that. After singling in the first inning, doubling in the second and tripling in the third, he struck out swinging in the fifth.

When he went back to the plate in the seventh, he was just hoping to get a hit.

"I went there to try and get my pitch, trying to make something happen," he said. "He threw me a fastball and I just drove it."

Valentin's solo shot was his second homer of the season; he hit his first Monday. His five RBI tied his career high.

He's just the fifth White Sox player to hit for the cycle. Teammate Chris Singleton did it last July 6 against Kansas City.

Though Valentin put up the biggest numbers, just about all of the White Sox picked on the Orioles. Chicago batted around twice, chased two pitchers and scored 10 runs in the first three innings alone.

They also got an adequate outing from Jim Parque (3-1), who gave up four runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings. And though he hit two batters, he didn't start any fights.

Parque plunked Dean Palmer in the seventh inning to start Saturday's brawl.

"Thank God for the runs," he said, "because I was wild."

Jose Mercedes (2-1) wasn't wild, just bad. He gave up four runs in the first 1 2/3 innings, and walked three. He was chased in the second after he loaded the bases with an intentional walk to Frank Thomas with two outs.

His replacement, Calvin Maduro, wasn't much better. He got Magglio Ordonez to fly out to right to end the inning, but he gave up six runs in the third. Paul Konerko started the barrage with a solo homer, his sixth of the year, to left, and then Maduro walked the next three batters.

Mark Johnson hit an RBI single, and then Valentin hit a three-run triple to clear the bases.

"This team is hot right now," Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said of the White Sox. "I've seen teams hot like this before, and they are really taking advantage of their opportunities. Parque was not sharp by any means. He was just fortunate that they gave him 10 runs in the first three innings."

Notes: Jeff Conine hit a solo homer in the sixth inning. ... Cal Ripken went 0-for-2, ending his hitting streak at 10 games. ... After just 22 games, the White Sox have five players with 20 or more RBI.
