GAME LOG
SAN DIEGO (AP) _ Damian Jackson had a two-run homer among his three hits, scored three runs and made an acrobatic play at shortstop as the San Diego Padres beat the Florida Marlins 8-3 on Tuesday night to stop a four-game losing streak. Matt Clement allowed three runs and five hits in eight innings to win his eighth straight decision since last Sept. 5. It figured that the Padres would support Clement (4-0). They've scored 52 runs in winning all six of his starts. He struck out seven and walked three. Before the game, the Padres found out that starting pitcher Woody Williams has an aneurysm near his right armpit and that doctors have recommended surgery. The Padres say it's similar to when New York Yankees pitcher David Cone had an aneurysm in his right shoulder in 1996 and missed four months. Phil Nevin homered for the first time in 50 at-bats and Al Martin also connected. Jackson hit a two-run homer to left off Vladimir Nunez with two outs in the fourth, his third of the year. Jackson also doubled and singled, falling a triple short of hitting for the cycle, which no Padres player has ever done. Jackson, who beat out Chris Gomez to win the starting shortstop job in spring training, made a spectacular play in the second inning. He went to his left to field Alex Gonzalez's grounder, leaped, spun around and threw him out at first to end the inning. Nevin hit a two-run homer to highlight the third-run third, his seventh. He hadn't homered since April 16 against Houston. Ryan Klesko had an RBI double and Bret Boone an RBI single in the third. Martin homered with two out in the sixth, his fifth. All three of Florida's runs came on homers. Mark Kotsay homered to center on Clement's first pitch of the game, his second leadoff homer of the year and his fourth overall. Vladimir Nunez, who came in with a 10.07 ERA, hit bitter than he pitched, connecting for a two-run homer in the fifth, the first in his big league career. Paul Bako was aboard on a one-out walk. Nunez (0-3) allowed eight runs and 10 hits in six innings, struck out six and walked one. Notes: Williams' aneurysm was discovered a day after he pitched 8 1-3 innings in a 5-2 loss to Florida. ... Klesko tied his career-high with his sixth stolen base in the first inning. ... San Diego's Eric Owens singled in the third to extend his hitting streak to 11. He had a 13-game hitting streak earlier in the year. If CF Ruben Rivera is activated on Friday as expected, Owens will move to RF to take the spot of Tony Gwynn, who's on the DL with a sore left knee. Owens has started 22 straight games in center.
