Erstad regains AL batting lead

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Darin Erstad and Troy Glaus homered and Garret Anderson drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the eighth inning as the Anaheim Angels beat the Texas Rangers 3-2 Thursday night.

With the score tied 2-2, Adam Kennedy singled with one out in the eighth off Kenny Rogers (3-4) and took third on Mo Vaughn's double. Tim Salmon was intentionally walked before Anderson lined a 1-1 pitch to center, scoring Kennedy.

Shigetoshi Hasegawa (1-0) earned the victory with three innings of one-hit relief, and Troy Percival got three outs for his 10th save.

Rogers was charged with three runs and 10 hits in 7 1/3 innings. He gave up a pair of singles with less than two outs in each of the first two innings and escaped both jams, but failed to hold a 2-0 lead, as Erstad homered in the fifth and Glaus led off the seventh with his ninth homer.

Ivan Rodriguez's solo homer opened the scoring for Texas in the first, and Luis Alicea drove in the second in the fifth with his third single.

Erstad regained the AL batting lead from Texas' David Segui with two hits. Erstad finished the game with a .388 average. The switch-hitting Segui, whose 13-game hitting streak was snapped, was 0-for-3 and dropped to .378. Segui started the game with a one-point lead over Erstad.

Kent Mercker, making his second start of the season for the Angels because of Jason Dickson's strained left hip flexor, lasted only 30 pitches before leaving with a severe headache and dizziness. He gave up two hits in 1 1/3 innings, including Rodriguez's 12th homer.

Mercker felt some discomfort in the second inning after throwing his 25th pitch. But he was allowed to continue and made five more pitches before leaving with a 2-2 count on Royce Clayton.

Mercker's problem came two nights after Ken Hill tore a muscle in his right side with one out in the third inning of a 5-2 loss against Oakland. Hill was put on the 15-day disabled list after that game.

Angels manager Mike Scioscia, who also lost shortstop Gary DiSarcina to the disabled list immediately following Monday night's 9-8 victory over Oakland, had to change pitchers again in the sixth when rookie right-hander Eric Weaver injured himself warming up. The extent of the injury was not announced by the club.
