Gil Meche struck out a career-high eight batters to pick up his first victory of the season for the Mariners, who have outscored the Twins 23-5 in the first two games of the series.

Buhner, off to a strong start after two injury-filled seasons, hit his eighth homer in the first inning off Sean Bergman (2-2) after Martinez hit a two-run double.

Meche (1-4), who won eight games for Seattle last season after being called up in July, pitched 6 2-3 innings, allowed three runs on six hits and walked two.

Bergman, who got hit on the left shin by Alex Rodriguez's hard grounder in the first, went 3 1-3 innings and gave up nine runs on eight hits and five walks.

The Twins scored their first run in the third when Cristian Guzman walked and Jay Canizaro hit a double. Guzman scored on Matt Lawton's sacrifice fly to make it 4-1.

In the bottom of the third, Martinez had an RBI single, giving him eight RBIs in two nights. He had two homers and five RBIs in a 14-0 victory Monday night.

In the fourth, David Bell hit a two-run double and Rodriguez hit a two-run single to give Seattle a 9-1 lead.

Butch Huskey and Jacque Jones each hit doubles to lead off the seventh for Minnesota's second run. Pinch-hitter Denny Hocking singled off Arthur Rhodes for the Twins' third run.

Minnesota's Ron Coomer, who went 3-for-5, homered off Jose Paniagua in the eighth, and added an RBI single off Jose Mesa in the ninth.
