GAME LOG
MIAMI (AP) -- The Los Angeles Dodgers added to their winning
streak and to their legacy, too.
Adrian Beltre and Shawn Green hit grand slams as the Dodgers hit
two in a game for the third time in franchise history, beating the
Florida Marlins 12-3 Sunday.
The Dodgers won their fifth in a row.
| | Green slugged one of a record six grand slams in the majors on Sunday. |
It was the first time the Dodgers had two grand slams in a game
since Aug. 23, 1985, when Pedro Guerrero and Mariano Duncan did it
against Montreal. Joe Kelley and Samuel Sheckard did it for the
Brooklyn Dodgers on Sept. 23, 1908, at Cincinnati.
"It is exciting to be a part of history," Green said.
"Especially with the Dodgers and their illustrious past."
The bases-loaded long balls backed Kevin Brown (3-1), who
retired 17 straight batters after Luis Castillo singled to lead off
the third inning.
Brown allowed an unearned run in the first inning and a two-run
homer to Cliff Floyd in the ninth.
Brown pitched a seven-hitter and struck out six for his first
win since beating the Marlins on April 30. It was Brown's first
complete game of the year.
"It was a good game," Brown said. "A great job by our offense
swinging the bat. It came in bunches. That makes it easier to
pitch."
Florida has lost four games in a row and six straight to the
Dodgers this season. In those six games, the Dodgers outscored the
Marlins 54-28.
"They came into the series hungry to put up numbers," Florida
manager John Boles said. "And they did."
The Dodgers closed out a four-city, 14-day, 12-game roadtrip in
which they went 7-4 with one rainout. They will now play 20 of
their next 26 games at Dodger Stadium and three of the six road
games are scheduled in Anaheim.
"It was a good road trip," Los Angeles manager Davey Johnson
said. "When you start out 0-3 and finish 7-4, you feel pretty good
about that."
Los Angeles scored seven runs in the ninth inning off closer
Antonio Alfonseca, pitching despite his team being down 5-1.
"It's one of those things that happens," Boles said. "He
hadn't pitched for three days and I was going to bring him in no
matter what the score was. It is one of those things. This is a
very humbling game this baseball. If you aren't on top of it, man,
oh man."
Alfonseca, who leads the league with 14 saves, didn't offer much
after the game.
"I don't have time," said Alfonseca, whose ERA shot from 3.86
to 6.55.
Green's grand slam wasn't the only big blow in the inning. Gary
Sheffield followed it with a solo homer.
The Dodgers have six grand slams this season, including
Sheffield's on Saturday against the Marlins.
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, the Dodgers scored five runs off
Jesus Sanchez (4-3). Mark Grudzielanek started the rally with a
single and Sanchez hit Green with a pitch and walked Sheffield to
load the bases. Eric Karros walked to score Grudzielanek, and
Beltre followed with his fifth homer and first career grand slam.
"It was a great feeling to get my first grand slam and I hope
they'll be coming a lot," Beltre said. "I had a lot of emotion
after the grand slam, but I didn't show it."
Grudzielanek went 4-for-6 with a stolen base. Karros reached
safely in all six at-bats with three singles, a double and two
walks.
"We went out against one of the better pitchers in the game,"
said Preston Wilson, who had two of his team's seven hits. "That's
why he's the highest-paid player in the game. They came in here and
had a great series. I don't think they are leaps and bounds better
than us talent-wise, but they came in and took some games."
Game notes
The Dodgers (24-17) are seven games over .500 for the first
time since ending the 1997 season with an 88-74 record. ... The
Marlins are 6-15 against the NL West and 16-8 against the rest of
the league. ... Castillo had three infield hits against Brown. He
has reached safely in 11 straight games and 26 of his past 27
games.
