White lifts hot Expos with perfect night

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Rondell White's success this season has a simple explanation.

"I'm in between two guys who are hitting .400," he said.

"They have to throw me strikes. They'd rather face me."

White homered and went 4-for-4 as the Montreal Expos defeated the San Francisco Giants 3-2 Tuesday night.

Jose Vidro, who bats just ahead of White and is batting .399 for the season, had three hits for the second consecutive game as the Expos won their fourth straight. Vladimir Guerrero (.386) bats behind White. He doubled and is hitting .452 in his last eight games. "Everybody is feeling good," White said. "We're all clicking. I don't feel like I have to carry this club. There are four or five guys who can carry this club. That lets everybody relax."

Barry Bonds homered and doubled twice for the Giants, who lost for the ninth time in 10 games. Carl Pavano (5-1) allowed two runs on seven hits in six-plus innings for the victory. Dustin Hermanson recorded the final four outs for his fourth save.

"Boy, it's tough," Giants manager Dusty Baker said. "We played good defense and we got good pitching. We're just coming up short. I don't know what we've got to do, but it's getting old."

Kirk Rueter (2-3) gave up three runs on nine hits in seven innings. He has not won in his last five starts dating to April 22.

Vidro now has 22 multi-hit games, including eight with three hits. He's batting .522 (24-for-46) since May 11, with eight doubles, three homers and 13 RBIs. "He's an amazing guy," Expos manager Felipe Alou said of the 25-year-old Vidro. "The bat control he has at such a young age is hard to believe."

White had his first four-hit game of the season and extended his hitting streak to 10 games. He's hitting .419 (18-for-43) during that span with six doubles and four homers. White's .359 (70-for-195) career average against the Giants is his best against any team.

"I just feel comfortable against them, and the success I've had in the past builds confidence," White said.

White's seventh homer of the season gave the Expos a 2-0 lead after Vidro singled in the first. White hit the first pitch from Rueter over the 404-foot sign in left-center field.

"I didn't think he hit it that good, but it went out," Rueter said. "It didn't sound good when he hit it, but he's strong and got it up."

Orlando Cabrera added his fourth homer of the year to put Montreal ahead 3-0.

Bonds' 17th homer, in the fourth, cleared the right-field stands and bounced off the boardwalk before splashing into McCovey Cove. Bonds also doubled home a run in the sixth.
