Reynoso shuts out St. Louis

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHOENIX (AP) -- Matt Williams, Steve Finley and Luis Gonzalez homered to end Arizona's power outage, and the Diamondbacks salvaged a series split by beating the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 Thursday night.

Armando Reynoso
Armando Reynoso blanked the Cards over seven innings and got support in the form of three D-Backs home runs.

Armando Reynoso (4-4) pitched seven strong innings for the win and handled the Mark McGwire-less Cardinals with ease. He allowed just four hits and struck out four before he was lifted for a pinch hitter.

Andy Benes (4-3), facing his former team for the first time, allowed six hits in 6 1/3 innings. But three of those hits were solo shots by Arizona's most consistent sluggers.

After Reynoso hit Fernando Vina with one out in the third, he retired the next 11 batters before giving up back-to-back singles to Jim Edmonds and Ray Lankford in the seventh.

Reynoso got out of the jam by getting Craig Paquette to fly out, and J.D. Drew to hit into a fielder's choice at second.

Kelly Stinnett's RBI single in the seventh made it 4-0 and chased Benes.

The Diamondbacks hit just four homers in the first nine games of their 10-game homestand, and had gone four games without one.

But the Diamondbacks, who lost the first two of the four-game series, made up for their power drought Thursday night.

Williams led off the second with his first homer in seven games, dating to last Sept. 27, against Colorado's Luther Hackney. Williams broke his right foot in spring training and was on the disabled list until May 23.

Finley hit his 19th -- giving him an NL-leading 52 RBI -- with two outs in the fourth, and Gonzalez drove a 434-foot shot into the right-field bleachers in the sixth.

McGwire, who hit his major league-leading 21st homer off Randy Johnson Wednesday night, was rested for the 10th game of a 16-day stretch in which the Cardinals play a game each day.

Vicente Padilla pitched the eighth, and Matt Mantei got the final three outs.
