Rockies rally past Rangers

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

DENVER (AP) -- Last winter, the Texas Rangers weren't interesting in paying the price to keep center fielder Tom Goodwin, who became a free agent. On Sunday, they paid for the slight.

Goodwin hit a two-run single, capping a four-run outburst in the eighth as the Colorado Rockies rallied to their fourth straight win, 9-8 over Texas.

Jeffrey Hammonds' two-run double preceded Goodwin's hit as Colorado handed the Rangers their fifth straight loss, matching their longest skid of the season.

"It doesn't really matter if it came against my former team or not," Goodwin insisted. "I still have a lot of friends over there, and I definitely wish them the best.

"We came in here thinking we could sweep the series, and we were able to come through in the clutch. It was definitely a group effort today. Being down as much as we were throughout the game, everybody just hung in there, battled and scraped some runs across here and there.

"Our big guys got the rally started that inning. Jeffrey obviously came through with a big double and I was fortunate enough to have an opportunity to get a hit to win the game."

Trailing 8-5, Colorado loaded the bases with no outs in the eighth on two singles and a walk off Mike Venafro.

Hammonds greeted Tim Crabtree (1-2) with a double down the left-field line. With two outs and the bases loaded again, Goodwin singled to short center.

Mike DeJean (1-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings, and Jose Jimenez pitched the ninth to earn his 11th save, starting a 1-6-3 double play to end the game.

Hammonds had three hits and four RBIs, and Goodwin had three hits and three RBIs.

Hammonds, whose key double came on an 0-2 count, said, "It was a fastball. He gave me a pitch to hit, and I was hoping it was going to stay fair. It could easily have been a 340-foot foul ball."

Rockies manager Buddy Bell said Goodwin's hit "has to make him feel good, coming against his former teammates. And Hammonds has been huge for us in the clutch. This game went from as bad as it gets to as good as it gets."

Ivan Rodriguez and Luis Alicea each had four hits for Texas, and David Segui drove in three runs.

"What's a word below frustrating? Demoralizing?" Rangers manager Johnny Oates said. "This is demoralizing. We spent all winter bragging about our pitching, but we're not pitching consistently.

"In the eighth, we had two guys 0-2 and gave them a pitch to hit. I'm tired of it. We're going to make changes. The first one is the easiest to make: (Matt) Perisho is going into the starting rotation. We've got two guys at Triple-A itching to get into the rotation. Call it a threat or whatever you want."

Clinging to a 6-5 lead, the Rangers scored twice in the seventh on Royce Clayton's 10th homer and Alicea's RBI single.

Darren Oliver, who missed his previously scheduled start because of a tired left shoulder, went five innings and left with a lead, but the Rangers bullpen couldn't hold it.

The Rangers jumped on Brian Bohanon for two runs in the first on Rusty Greer's RBI triple and Rodriguez's single.

Colorado cut the deficit to 2-1 in the second on Hammonds' sacrifice fly.

Michael Lamb's RBI single in the third made it 3-1, but the Rockies got a run in their half on doubles by Neifi Perez and Goodwin.

Rodriguez got his third straight single to lead off the fifth, reaching third when center fielder Goodwin let the ball get past him for a two-base error. Segui made it 4-2 with an infield single.

Texas went ahead 6-2 in the sixth on Segui's two-run infield single.

Bold baserunning helped the Rockies score three times in their half to make it 6-5. Larry Walker scored from first on Hammonds' bloop single to right off Jeff Zimmerman. Hammonds went to third on Scott Servais' single and raced home when second baseman Alicea booted the relay from right field.

Game notes
Hammonds extended his hitting streak to a career-high 11 games. ... Mike Lansing did not start for the second straight game because of a sore lower back, but he entered Sunday's game in the seventh. ... Goodwin committed his first error of the season and first since May 22, 1999, when he was with Texas -- a span of 123 games. ... Gabe Kapler made a diving catch in left-center field to rob Hammonds in the second inning, but the sacrifice fly scored Jeff Cirillo from third. ... Chad Curtis' sliding catch near the right-field line ended a Rockies' threat in the fourth. ... Goodwin, with 32 RBIs, is on pace to drive in 82 runs this season. In each of his past two seasons, he had only 33 RBIs, and his career high is 35 (with Kansas City in 1996).
