GAME LOG
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Jarrod Washburn took a two-hit shutout into the ninth inning, and Darin Erstad had a home run, three RBI and game-saving catch to lead the Anaheim Angels over the Kansas City Royals 3-1 Wednesday night. Washburn (3-1) allowed four hits in 8 1/3 innings, struck out three and walked one. After he gave up a pair of ninth-inning singles, Troy Percival relieved and allowed an RBI single to Carlos Beltran. Jermaine Dye then was robbed of a three-run homer by Erstad, who leaned against the short fence in the left-field corner and made the catch as a fan nearly knocked the ball away. Mike Sweeney flied out, giving Percival his 18th save in 23 chances, just his fifth in his last nine. Kansas City had averaged seven runs in its previous seven meetings with the Angels this season. Mac Suzuki (3-1) allowed all three runs and six hits in seven innings. Washburn and Suzuki both had one-hitters through the first 4½ innings, until Anaheim's Adam Kennedy -- batting ninth for only the third time in 65 starts this season -- singled with two outs in the fifth. Erstad followed with his 14th homer. After two more hits, Suzuki struck out Tim Salmon with runners at the corners. Kennedy tripled off the center-field fence in the seventh for only his fifth hit in 33 career at-bats against the Royals, and scored on Erstad's groundout. Game notesTim Belcher, scheduled Thursday to make his second start since coming off the disabled list, has an 0-7 career record against the Royals. Kansas City is the only AL league team the 14-year veteran right-hander has never defeated. Belcher has beaten every NL team except Arizona and Colorado, the only two he has never faced. ... Erstad, who has 54 RBI in 69 games, is trying to become the first leadoff batter in Angels history with 20 homers and 100 RBI. ... Kansas City recalled OF Mark Quinn from Triple-A Omaha and sent INF Ray Holbert outright to Omaha. ... Washburn's only other shutout in professional ball was on July 23, 1997, for Double-A Midland against Shreveport. ... Angels RHP Ken Hill, on the disabled list since May 10 because of a strained muscle in his right ribcage, is penciled in to start next Wednesday at Seattle. ... Angels RHP Jason Dickson, sidelined since May 15, was examined Wednesday by Dr. Lewis Yokum at the Kerlan-Jobe Clinic and had an MRI that showed additional wear on the right labrum in his shoulder. Dickson will continue therapy, and no timetable has been set for him to throw again. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard Kansas City Clubhouse Anaheim Clubhouse RECAPS Boston 9 NY Yankees 7
