SEATTLE (AP) -- John Halama was in control, and so were the Seattle Mariners.

"I've been solid in my last couple of starts, but I wasn't getting the first pitch over for a strike," Halama said Saturday after a 2-1 win over the Baltimore Orioles. "Today I was ahead inthe count, and I didn't walk anyone."
Halama (7-3) allowed seven hits in eight innings, struck out
four and walked none to win for the first time since beating the
Chicago White Sox on May 29. He started the season 6-0.
While the Mariners extended their longest winning streak of the
season to five, Baltimore lost its eighth straight.
"At the tail end of an eight-game losing streak, it's very easy
to feel sorry for yourself, throw your hands up and give in,"
Orioles manager Mike Hargrove said. "Our guys didn't do that. They
all stepped up today."
Kazuhiro Sasaki pitched the ninth for his 13th save in 15 chances, dropping Baltimore's record at Safeco Field to 0-6.
Seattle has won seven consecutive series for the first time in
franchise history.
"This game was won on pitching and defense," Mariners manager
Lou Piniella said. "John needed a good game today. He was on, and
he hit his spots when he needed to."
Pat Rapp (4-5) allowed two runs and four hits in seven innings,
struck out a season-high eight and walked three. Seattle didn't get
a hit after the second inning. In his last 11 starts, Rapp is 1-5
with a 5.68 ERA.
"It took 20 or 25 pitches to get through the first inning,"
Hargrove said. "After that, he was outstanding. Pat really stepped
up today."
Baltimore went ahead in the first on two-out singles by B.J.
Surhoff, Albert Belle and Jeff Conine.
Mark McLemore, returning from a four-game suspension, hit a
leadoff single in the bottom half, took third on Stan Javier's
double and scored on Alex Rodriguez's sacrifice fly.
John Olerud drove in the go-ahead run with two outs, hitting his
major league-leading 26th double. He had been 0-for-12 against Rapp
-- his most at-bats against any pitcher he was hitless against.
"It was looking like it was going to be a high-scoring game," Piniella said, "but it turned out to be a pitchers' duel."
The Orioles nearly chased Halama in the eighth inning, but a
spectacular defensive play by Rodriguez at shortstop ended the
threat. With Mike Bordick on first with one out, Surhoff hit a
fastball up the middle. Mike Bordick was running on the play, and
Rodriguez managed to stop the ball, get to second for the forceout
and throw to first for a double play.
"I honestly felt it was a great hit," Halama said. "I was
ready to come off the field because I knew we had (Jose) Paniagua
ready in the 'pen to face Albert Belle."
Baltimore would have had runners at the corners with one out.
"It was incredible," Conine said. "He is a big-time player
and he made a big-time play."
Game notes
Baltimore is tied with Texas for the major league lead with
16 one-run losses, including 15 on the road. ... Surhoff's
first-inning single extended his hitting streak to 18 games. ...
Brady Anderson, 0-for-9 in the series and 3-for-28 in his last nine
games, did not start. ... Cal Ripken, returning after a night off,
is 2-for-23 in his last six games. ... Edgar Martinez is 0-for-7
since his eighth-inning grand slam Thursday night. ... The Mariners
have won seven straight games over Baltimore in Seattle, while the
Orioles have won the last seven games against Seattle at Camden
Yards.
