Bere strikes out 13 in 8-6 victory

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Even an umpire's confusion wasn't about to get in the way of Jason Bere.

Bere shook off a controversial walk to strike out a season-high 13 in eight innings and lead the Milwaukee Brewers to an 8-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday.

The Phillies scored three runs to tie it in the fifth inning after the game was delayed almost eight minutes because the umpires lost track of the count.

Jason Bere
The Phillies couldn't keep track of Milwaukee pitcher Jason Bere on Thursday, and neither could the umpires.

With two outs, Phillies manager Terry Francona complained to home plate umpire Scott Packard that pinch-hitter Alex Arias had walked. Packard had a 3-2 count. After discussing the matter with the rest of the umpires, Packard called the press box and it was confirmed that Arias had actually walked.

"I had asked (Packard) on the pitch before," Bere said. "The scoreboard said 3-2 but (Packard) signaled 2-2. That play had nothing to do with the way I pitched the rest of the inning. It's just something I'd never seen before."

"They just got mixed up," Francona said. "I just wanted them to get it right. To their credit, they did."

The frame would contain Bere's only trouble. In the other seven innings, one baserunner advanced past first base and only three balls were hit out of the infield.

"I had a good live fastball," Bere said. "When that happens, the offspeed stuff is that much better."

Bere (5-6) made 127 pitches and struck out seven of the final 10 batters he faced, including the side in the sixth and eighth innings. He finished one short of his career-high set in 1995. He walked two and lowered his ERA to 5.06.

"I'm looking for him to be a big winner," Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes said. "That's the fourth quality start for Jason in a row. He's only got one win to show for during that stretch, but he's pitched great.

"His fastball was around 93 and 94 consistently. That's a good sign."

Bere allowed three runs and six hits for his first road win since April 7 and snap the club's three-game losing streak.

"This is as good as I've ever felt," said Bere, who was 12-2 with a 3.81 ERA in 1994. "The past three weeks I've been getting stronger and stronger."

Raul Casanova hit a solo homer and an RBI double as the Brewers avoided being swept in the final series of a 10-game road trip. Milwaukee won four games on the trip and will begin a 10-game homestand against the Cubs on Friday.

"We were 4-6 but that could have easily been turned around the other way," Lopes said. "There were some very positive signs on this trip, that was good to see."

It wasn't exactly easy as the Milwaukee bullpen struggled again.

The Phillies scored three runs in the ninth off Bob Wickman on a solo homer by Brian Hunter and a two-run single by Bobby Abreu. Curtis Leskanic struck out Scott Rolen with two runners on for his first save since July 23, 1998.

"A five-run lead with Wickman on the mound is the ideal situation but it got hairy there," Lopes said.

Luis Lopez broke the tie with an RBI double off Phillies reliever Steve Schrenk (2-3) in the sixth.

Casanova, who hit his fourth homer to open the scoring in the second, doubled in a run to make it 5-3 in the seventh.

Milwaukee got two more in the eighth on an RBI single by Marquis Grissom and Jeromy Burnitz's double-play grounder. Lyle Mouton added an RBI double in the ninth.

David Coggin, making his second big league start, allowed six hits and three runs over five innings. He walked four and struck out one.
