Rodriguez hospitalized overnight

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

SEATTLE (AP) -- Four days before the All-Star game, Alex Rodriguez is in the hospital.

The Seattle shortstop Rodriguez sustained a concussion while trying to break up a double play Friday night and the Mariners lost to Los Angeles 3-2 on Eric Karros' home run in the 11th inning.

Alex Rodriguez is helped off the field after suffering a concussion in a collision Friday night.

Rodriguez underwent a CAT scan and neurological tests and was to be hospitalized overnight for observation, the Mariners said. More tests were to conducted Saturday.

There was no word on how long Rodriguez would be sidelined. He is supposed to start for the AL in Atlanta on Tuesday night.

"There's no way to speculate in the next 24 to 48 hours," Mariners trainer Rick Griffin said. "We're going to have to see how Alex feels."

Rodriguez was hit flush in the left side of the face by shortstop Alex Cora's knee in the fifth inning. Cora jumped out of the way, trying to avoid Rodriguez's slide.

"He was knocked silly," Mariners manager Lou Piniella said.

Cora applauded Rodriguez's effort of trying to break up the double play.

"It's awesome from the standpoint that it is a superstar like him," Cora said. "He gives everything for his team."

Dodgers manager Davey Johnson saw the play perfectly from the bench and winced. He faulted his young player's mechanics.

"He jumped up in the air and A-Rod tried to take him out," Johnson said. "That's a play I'd rather see my shortstop throw from behind second base rather than coming across the bag."

Griffin said he did not think Rodriguez was knocked out, adding, "He was saying some funny things. He was talking about high school football."

After laying motionless for several minutes, a dazed Rodriguez was helped to his feet and assisted to the dugout by Seattle's trainers. He then was taken to Providence Hospital by ambulance.

Rodriguez played with Cora's older brother, Joey, in Seattle in 1995-98.

Karros hit his 25th homer of the season with one out in the 11th off Arthur Rhodes (2-3).

It was Karros' second winning, extra-inning homer this season. Karros has four interleague home runs this year, and 22 in his career.

Matt Herges (6-0) pitched two innings for the victory. Mike Fetters pitched the 11th inning to get his third save in as many chances.

Todd Hundley gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run double. Los Angeles won with only five hits.

In the fifth, the Mariners loaded the bases on one-out singles by Guillen, Rickey Henderson and Stan Javier before Carlos Perez walked Rodriguez to force home a run.

Edgar Martinez grounded sharply to Cora, who elected to touch second before throwing to first. Cora and Rodriguez reached the bag about the same time.

The collision left both players on the ground, but Cora got up and stayed in the game. Guillen moved from third base to shortstop to replace Rodriguez, who has started every game for the Mariners this season.

The Mariners tied it at 2 in the eighth with an unearned run, their second bases-loaded walk of the game. They loaded the bases on singles by Martinez and Jay Buhner and third baseman Adrian Beltre's error before Terry Adams walked Guillen.

In the first, Freddy Garcia issued a one-out walk to Todd Hollandsworth and a single to Gary Sheffield before striking out Shawn Green.

Garcia, activated Friday after being on the disabled list since April 22 with a fractured right leg, walked Eric Karros to load the bases before Hundley doubled to right to score Hollandsworth and Sheffield.

Garcia, a 17-game winner as a rookie for Seattle last season, gave up two runs on four hits and five walks in six innings. He struck out six, including Green three times swinging.

Henderson, signed by the Mariners on May 17 after being released by the New York Mets, moved into sole possession of second place in career walks with 2,020, one more than Ted Williams. Babe Ruth is first with 2,062.

Game notes
Hundley, the Dodgers' catcher, caught a foul tip on a pitch to Buhner, the next-to-last pitch of the game, on the thumb of his throwing hand. X-rays were negative and he was listed as day to day with a bone bruise. ... The Mariners had their seventh sellout of the season. They expect to have sellouts Saturday night and Sunday, too. ... To make room for Garcia on their roster, the Mariners placed RHP Frankie Rodriguez on the 15-day DL, retroactive to July 1, because of inflammation on his right shoulder. ... 2B Mark Grudzielanek, hitting .370 on the Dodgers' road trip, was scratched from the lineup because of the flu. ... John Olerud hit his 31st double, tied with Montreal's Jose Vidro for the major league lead.
