GAME LOG
NEW YORK (AP) -- After being traded four times in his career,
Denny Neagle is quickly adjusting to his new home.
In his second start with the New York Yankees, Neagle pitched a
four-hitter for his 100th career victory, 5-1 over the Tampa Bay
Devil Rays on Sunday.
| | Denny Neagle, 2-0 since joining the Yankees, is 10-2 overall this season and has won 16 of his last 18 decisions. |
The left-hander struck out eight and walked one, and got a
standing ovation and chants of "De-nny, De-nny," after getting
Jose Canseco to foul out to catcher Jorge Posada to end the game.
Posada gave Neagle the game ball as the Yankees poured out of
the dugout to congratulate him.
Neagle (2-0), who won his fifth straight start overall,
including his final three with the Cincinnati Reds before being
traded to the Yankees on July 12, pitched his first complete game
since Aug. 16, 1998, at Los Angeles with Atlanta. He is 10-2
overall this season and has won 16 of his last 18 decisions since
Aug. 30, 1999.
"I'm glad I can go out and pitch the way I know I can, I was
especially relaxed going for my 100th win," Neagle said.
"It's nice to get your 100th win no matter where, but a
complete game at Yankee Stadium makes it a special moment. I don't
think there's any kid, whether you dislike or like them, that
doesn't respect the Yankees.
"It seems like yesterday I was getting my first win, and now 10
years later, I have 100."
Neagle retired 13 straight batters from the last out of the
second through the sixth inning. Greg Vaughn led off the seventh
with a double to the left-field corner, just the second hit for
Tampa Bay, but only reached third when Fred McGriff followed with a
fly ball that fell in for a double in right center. Vaughn
eventually scored on Bubba Trammell's groundout.
"I was a lot more relaxed, getting all my pitches in the right
location," Neagle said. "I came right out from the get go. That's
how I'll be successful, frustrate them and get them to hit your
pitch."
Manager Joe Torre was impressed.
"Even if he gets behind in the count, it looks like the hitter
gets uncomfortable," Torre said. "He have us a chance to win, he
makes the fact that even if you score two runs, maybe you can win
the ballgame. It's a lift for our ballclub."
The Yankees have won four of six and 13 of 19 games, while Tampa
Bay has lost five of six.
"He's going to help them. He's already helped them -- two
wins," Devil Rays manager Larry Rothschild said of Neagle.
Neagle, who can be a free agent after the season, has settled in
quickly in New York.
"One thing I learned about being traded is you can't let it
bother you," Neagle said. "It didn't affect me at all, it
happened quickly, over the All-Star break. I fit in well, I'm
adapting with these guys, I just want to be myself and have fun. I
love all things New York has to offer, baseball and non-baseball
wise."
Derek Jeter went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI double,
extending his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games.
"Neagle went out and basically shut them down," Jeter said.
"We get pitching performances like we did today and we're going to
be pretty tough to beat."
Jeter was denied a home run in the seventh when center fielder
Gerald Williams leaped over the wall to make the catch.
"He made a great play," Rothschild said. "Too bad it didn't
have an effect on the game."
Chuck Knoblauch led off the bottom of the fourth with a single
to left and scored on Jeter's double to left-center. One out later,
Bernie Williams doubled to deep center, scoring Jeter for a 2-0
lead.
The Yankees added three runs in the fifth as Jorge Posada lined
a single to center and went to second when Scott Brosius' single
went off the glove of shortstop Felix Martinez. On Jose Vizcaino's
sacrifice, starter Bryan Rekar threw the ball over the head of
McGriff at first, allowing Posada to score, Brosius to reach third
and Vizcaino second. Knoblauch's sacrifice fly scored Brosius and
Vizcaino came home on Paul O'Neill's sacrifice fly.
Rekar (3-6) allowed five runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and
two walks in seven innings, striking out five.
