DENVER (AP) -- Kevin Brown never ceases to amaze Davey Johnson.
Brown impressed his manager once again Monday night, pitching
eight innings of three-hit ball while Gary Sheffield hit his major
league-leading 34th home run as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the
Colorado Rockies 4-1.
"He is unbelievable," Johnson said. "In this day, in this
ballpark and against that ballclub, he was just unbelievable."

Brown (10-3), who limited the Rockies to one hit in eight
innings last Wednesday, struck out five and walked one. He is 6-2
in his last 10 starts.
"The results were good," Brown said. "When you pitch in this
park, you try to minimize your mistakes and try to keep them
off-balance, especially the way that team can swing the bats."
Sheffield went 3-for-3 with a homer, triple and double, and
drove in three runs.
Needing a single to become the first Dodgers player to hit for
the cycle since Wes Parker in 1970, Sheffield was hit by a pitch in the ribs in
the seventh inning and walked in the ninth.
Sheffield is 16-for-40 with seven homers and 13 RBI in his last
12 games.
"I did what I could to help the team," Sheffield said. "When
you have Kevin pitching, you don't need much."
Mike Fetters got his fifth save as the Dodgers won for the fifth
time in six games.
Rolando Arrojo (5-9) gave up three runs and seven hits in six
innings in losing his fourth consecutive decision.
"Arrojo did a good job, but Sheffield is on fire right now,"
Colorado manager Buddy Bell said. "Kevin Brown was on his game
tonight and he's never easy to beat when he is on his game."
Brown didn't allow a hit until Todd Walker tripled into the
right-field corner with one out in the third inning. Arrojo struck
out and Tom Goodwin grounded out to end the threat.
Sheffield followed a one-out walk to Mark Grudzielanek with a
triple over the leaping Larry Walker and off the scoreboard in
right field in the first.
Grudzielanek singled to start the third and Sheffield hit an RBI
double over the head of left fielder Butch Huskey. Sheffield's solo
home run in the fifth made it 3-0.
The Dodgers added a run in the seventh on Shawn Green's
bases-loaded single off Julian Tavarez.
Huskey homered leading off the eighth inning for Colorado.
"Kevin Brown is Kevin Brown," Huskey said. "Teams don't make
a living off of beating him."
Game notes
Walker's triple was the first hit allowed by Brown in 11
innings. ... Brown took Goodwin's one-hopper off the his right shin
with one out in the sixth inning, but remained in the game. ...
Walker made his first start in right field after playing 29 games
in left since coming off the DL in June. ... Arrojo matched a
season high with eight strikeouts. ... Rockies reliever Mike DeJean
left the game with strained oblique muscle in his right side after
pitching to one batter in the seventh.
