Down to final out, Royals rally for win

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

CHICAGO (AP) -- Unlike most teams, the Kansas City Royals have no problem beating the Chicago White Sox.

Dave McCarty hit a game-tying single off Keith Foulke in the ninth inning and Johnny Damon followed with a go-ahead double Wednesday as the Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 7-6.

"These kids play hard," Royals manager Tony Muser said. "They haven't won a lot of ballgames and they've had a lot of heart-breaking losses, but they never quit. They keep coming back and battle, and that's a sign of great character."

Mark Quinn
Mark Quinn's two-run homer contributed to the Royals' early 4-0 lead over the White Sox and starter James Baldwin.

With Chicago leading 5-4 and two outs in the ninth, Todd Dunwoody hit an infield single and Gregg Zaun walked, chasing Bob Howry (1-2).

McCarty greeted Foulke with a single, Damon doubled and Rey Sanchez singled in another run for a 7-5 lead. It was Foulke's third blown save in 21 chances.

"I couldn't commit to a fastball in because he has a great changeup," Damon said. "He threw that changeup in and I kept my hands inside the ball. and I put it in the right spot."

Kansas City improved to 6-3 against the White Sox this season.

"I still felt like I threw good pitches -- they were just in spots where they could handle them," Foulke said.

Pinch-hitter Jose Valentin homered off Jerry Spradlin (4-2) with one out in the bottom half as Kansas City, which earlier wasted a 4-0 lead, held on.

Magglio Ordonez singled with two outs, and Ricky Bottalico relieved and retired Herbert Perry on a first-pitch flyout to the warning track in right for his eighth save in 14 chances.

The Royals finished their road trip 6-3. All three losses were because of seventh-inning, go-ahead home runs.

"It's been tough on this trip. We should've won a lot more games than we did," Dye said.

Jermaine Dye and Mark Quinn each hit two-run homers off James Baldwin as Kansas City built a 4-0 lead, but Chicago rallied in a four-run sixth and Perry homered off Andy Larkin in the eighth. Perry, who homered for the second straight game, has eight homers, a career high.

Dye, who had a pair of two-run homers in Tuesday's 6-1 victory, hit his 26th with two out in the first and is one short of his career high, set last year. Quinn homered in the fourth.

"They come in bunches," Dye said of his home run surge.

Baldwin has allowed 28 homers, tied with Kansas City's Jeff Suppan for the league high. Baldwin, who failed in his second attempt to match his career high of 13 wins, gave up four runs and six hits in seven innings.

Kansas City's Dan Reichert allowed four runs -- one earned -- five hits and six walks in five-plus innings.

"I just got out of whack," Reichert said. "I was thinking too much about stuff. Once you start thinking on the mound, it gets out of control."

Chicago tied the game in a four-run sixth that began with Frank Thomas' double, only the third hit off Reichert. Ordonez reached on a throwing error by Zaun, who had fielded Ordonez's ball in front of the plate.

Perry and Greg Norton each hit RBI singles, Carlos Lee walked to load the bases and Jeff Abbott hit into a run-scoring double play off Larkin. Pinch-hitter Paul Konerko followed with an RBI single that tied the score.
