Phillies chip away at Dodgers' Brown

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Cliff Politte is here to stay if he keeps pitching like he did Saturday night.

Politte, just called up from the minors, gave up four hits in seven scoreless inning to beat Kevin Brown and lead the struggling Philadelphia Phillies over the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0.

"That was by far the best he's ever located the ball," Phillies manager Terry Francona said. "It's hard being sent down. It's no fun. If you're going to play baseball, this is the place. It doesn't mean we quit on him."

Philadelphia had lost four straight, eight of 10, and hadn't won since Curt Schilling beat Pittsburgh last Sunday. Schilling was traded to Arizona on Wednesday.

Politte (2-2), called up Friday when Paul Byrd was placed on the disabled list, made his case to remain in a depleted rotation that suddenly finds itself without an ace.

The 26-year-old right-hander didn't allow a hit until Todd Hundley singled with two outs in the fourth, and won for the first time since June 17. He struck out six and walked three, tying the longest outing of his career.

"Nothing is set in stone. I have to come ready every five days and do what I did tonight," said Politte, who wasn't thrilled after being sent back to Triple A Scranton Wilkes-Barre on June 23. "I had an option left and I knew it was coming. I didn't want to get frustrated."

Vicente Padilla, one of four players acquired in the Schilling deal, pitched a scoreless eighth despite allowing two singles and a walk. He retired Adrian Beltre on a grounder to shortstop with the bases loaded, ending the inning.

Jeff Brantley got his 16th save in 19 chances.

"I was going to let him get out of it," Francona said about Padilla. "In Arizona, maybe because they have a deeper bullpen, they went and got him. Here he's going to need to finish some innings."

Brown (10-4), who had won six of his previous seven decisions, allowed three runs and six hits in six innings, walked four and struck out five.

"It just wasn't one of Brownie's better days," Dodgers manager Davey Johnson said. "That's why this is such a great game. You never know. You guys are probably going to have to rewrite your stories."

Scott Rolen's RBI fielder's choice gave the Phillies a 1-0 lead in the first. Philadelphia got three hits in the first off Brown, who had allowed just four hits and one earned run in his previous two starts, spanning 16 innings.

Doug Glanville led off with a single, advanced to third on a single by Mickey Morandini and scored on Rolen's one-out grounder.

Politte started a two-run fifth with a one-out double -- his first career extra-base hit.

After Glanville walked, Morandini doubled to right, scoring Politte to make it 2-0. Morandini scored on Bobby Abreu's bouncer to second for a 3-0 lead. "Anything you get off Brown, you have to hope is enough," Francona said. "He's one of the best there is."

Los Angeles had two runners on base just once against Politte after he walked two batters in the second. Politte got out of the jam by striking out Alex Cora and Brown to end the inning.

Politte retired seven in a row and 12 of 14 at one point.

His other win came on a night when the Phillies honored their 1980 World Championship team. Before Saturday's game, the Phillies honored broadcaster Harry Kalas, who is celebrating his 30th year with the team.

"You feed off that stuff," Politte said. "Brown is one of the best in the game. You feed off that too."
