Vladimir homer puts Expos over top

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

MONTREAL (AP) -- The Montreal Expos finally backed up a good pitching performance with some timely hitting.

Vladimir Guerrero hit a three-run homer and Trey Moore pitched five shutout innings in his first appearance in more than two years as the Montreal Expos snapped a seven-game skid with a 4-0 win Tuesday night over the St. Louis Cardinals. "That was a big hit," Expos manager Felipe Alou said. "I believe his last home run was in Boston and we haven't had the long ball for a while now."

Guerrero hit his 26th home run -- and first since July 16 -- off Rick Ankiel (7-7) with runners on first and second in the fifth inning as Montreal won for just the sixth time in its last 21 games.

"When he hit it, it looked like, 'Hey, we're going to win the game now!"' Alou said.

Moore (1-0), making his first appearance since June 6, 1998, allowed two hits and three walks, and struck out eight.

"It was a lot of fun," Moore said. "It felt really good to get out there again."

He missed the entire 1999 season after having arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder Aug. 5, 1998. "He's throwing harder, with better life than two years ago, the last time he pitched in the major leagues," Alou said. "We like him. We know he's a tough kid, too. He's a competitor. He's made some big steps this summer to be where he is now."

Anthony Telford allowed two hits over two innings in relief of Moore and Steve Kline finished the Expos' fourth shutout of the season.

The Cardinals, whose season-high 10-game lead in the NL Central over Cincinnati is down to four, are 8-14 since Mark McGwire went on the DL.

"We didn't do much offensively against their starter, and their relievers put us away," Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said.

Montreal's Milton Bradley singled with one out in the fifth and advanced to second on Jose Vidro's infield single. After a groundout, Guerrero hit a drive over the wall in left center to put the Expos up 3-0. Guerrero, who was intentionally walked twice in the game, leads the Expos with 86 RBIs. Guerrero, who rarely talks to reporters, refused to talk following the game, leaving it to others to comment on his performance. "They weren't giving him anything to hit but that curveball stayed in the zone, and that's a mistake," Alou said. "He took advantage of it."

Ankiel, 1-4 in his last five starts, allowed six hits and three runs in five innings. He struck out five and walked three.

Moore didn't allow his first hit until Craig Paquette singled with one out in the fifth. Fernando Vina added a two-out single before Moore struck out Edgar Renteria with his 82nd pitch.

"He was tough," Vina said. "He threw some good pitches. You've got to tip your hat to him, he pitched a great game. He threw his changeup and he was getting everything over."

Will Clark, acquired from Baltimore on Monday to play first base while McGwire is out with a knee injury, doubled off the base of the wall in right center with two outs in the seventh in his first at-bat for St. Louis.

Pinch-hitter Andy Tracy's RBI triple in the seventh off relieverMatt Morris drove in Montreal's fourth run.
