Relievers come through for Boston

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

BOSTON (AP) -- Brian Daubach figures it's time he got into another good streak.

Rico Brogna
Rico Brogna takes a cut during his first at-bat as a member of the Boston Red Sox against the Royals on Friday night. Brogna went 1-for-3.

Daubach, mired in a 4-for-33 slump, hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning as the Boston Red Sox relied on superb relief pitching and overcame a four-run deficit to beat Kansas City 5-4 Friday.

"I've always been a streaky guy," said Daubach, who made it to the majors last year after spending nine seasons in the minors. "To tell you the truth, that's what probably took me a while to get to the big leagues."

Daubach, leading off, hit a drive into the center-field seats off Andy Larkin (0-1) for his 16th homer.

"It's never easy," Daubach said of his inconsistent stretches. "I think I went three weeks without an RBI (last year). Being my second year, though, I think its easier to take."

Three Red Sox relievers combined for 4 1-3 innings of scoreless relief after starter Jeff Fassero was knocked out in the fifth.

Brogna makes first start for boyhood-favorite Boston
BOSTON (AP) -- Rico Brogna always wanted to play for the Red Sox. On Friday night, he got his chance.

Brogna, acquired from Philadelphia on waivers Thursday, started at first base for the team he cheered for growing up in Connecticut. The 30-year-old first baseman had played for Detroit, the New York Mets and Philadelphia during his seven-year career.

"This was one of the first places my agent and I talked about," Brogna said. "It was being a Red Sox fan and wanting to play with them my whole life."

Brogna, who was born in Turners Falls, Mass., grew up in Watertown, Conn., and still lives in Connecticut. He played in just 38 games this season with the Phillies due to a fractured left arm sustained in early May and hit .248.

"This bring back so many childhood memories," Brogna said. "To actually be able to put on the uniform for the Red Sox. ... I was Carlton (Fisk) in the backyard waving the ball fair when I was 7, 8 years old. Not to be corny, but it really is a dream come true."

In his last three seasons with Philadelphia, Brogna hit at least 20 homers each year, including two seasons with 100 or more RBIs.

Rich Garces (7-0) pitched a one-hit eighth and Derek Lowe finished with a perfect ninth for his 24th save in 29 chances. Hipolito Pichardo worked 2 1-3 innings, allowing just one walk.

"The bullpen did a good job to shut them out," Boston manager Jimy Williams said. "I thought overall our pitchers pitched good. We fought back from 4-0."

It was the seventh loss in eight games for the Royals, who played until nearly 2 a.m. Friday morning in New York.

"When we get a team down by four runs we should be able to put them away," Kansas City manager Tony Muser said. "We lack killer instinct."

Nomar Garciaparra went 2-for-4, raising his average to .394.

Joe Randa had a two-run single for Kansas City and Mark Quinn added two hits and one RBI.

Fassero gave up four runs and seven hits in 4 2-3 innings, while Kansas City's Jeff Suppan gave up four runs and eight hits in six innings.

After the Royals went up 4-0 in the fifth, the Red Sox bullpen took over. They held Kansas City to one hit the rest of the way.

"The guys said, 'You did it again,'" said Garces, now 12-1 over the past two seasons. "What can I say? I'll take it."

Jermaine Dye hit an RBI single in the third, and the Royals made it 4-0 in the fifth on Randa's two-run single and Quinn's RBI single.

Rico Brogna, who went 1-for-3 in his first game for Boston after the Red Sox obtained him from Philadelphia on a waiver claim, hit an RBI grounder in the fifth, and Darren Lewis and Trot Nixon followed with RBI singles.

Troy O'Leary's triple tied the score in the sixth following Garciaparra's single.
