White Sox get break from ump's bad call

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) -- The Chicago White Sox made the most of a blown call.

Carlos Lee homered and drove in the go-ahead run with a 10th-inning sacrifice fly Saturday as the White Sox beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-4.

Magglio Ordonez, who went 4-for-4 with two RBI, opened the 10th with a single off former White Sox closer Roberto Hernandez (3-4).

Ordonez took second on Mike DiFelice's passed ball, moved to third on a balk and scored on Lee's fly to left field.

Second base umpire Rick Reed, who after the game admitted he missed the call, called the balk when Hernandez used his right hand to ask DiFelice for a new set of signs.

"I made a mistake," Reed said. "It's hard for me to admit that. I don't like to be involved in the scoring of the game and I don't want to be involved in the outcome of the game. Unfortunately, today I was and it's not something I want to get into.

"I saw his hand go up and when his hand went up, that's when I attributed it as starting his motion," Reed added. "However, on the replay, it showed exactly what he was doing was going for another sign."

The balk was first called against Hernandez in his major league career -- which totals 563 games.

"That's what happens when you're in last place," Hernandez said. "When you're in last place, I don't think they give a damn about what we do. This is probably the toughest call I've had to swallow in my career. I could understand if I did it, but to give a team a run like that without even earning it. They blew it."

Mark Buehrle (3-1) allowed one hit in one scoreless inning. Keith Foulke got three outs for his 21st save in 25 opportunities.

"We've found a lot of different ways, at least this particular season, to win ballgames," White Sox manager Jerry Manuel said.

The Devil Rays scored once in the eighth to tie it at 4. Greg Vaughn drew a two-out walk from Bob Howry, Kelly Wunsch walked Fred McGriff on four pitches and Jose Guillen hit an RBI single that deflected off third baseman Herbert Perry.

Reliever Esteban Yan kept the Devil Rays close in the top of the eighth. He entered with the bases loaded and one out and worked out of the jam by striking out pinch-hitter Harold Baines and Charles Johnson.

Ordonez, who drove in three runs in Chicago's 6-5 come-from-behind win over the Devil Rays on Friday night, had an RBI single in the first. He hit a sacrifice fly during a two-run third that put the White Sox up 4-1.

Lee hit his 20th homer of the season in the second. Frank Thomas had a third-inning RBI double.

"I guess luck was on our side today," Chicago's Jeff Abbott said. "Maybe this is our year with stuff like this going on."

Coupled with Cleveland's 5-4 victory over Seattle, the White Sox remain 8½ games ahead of the Indians in the AL Central.

Vaughn, who broke a 1-for-14 slide, and Aubrey Huff homered for Tampa Bay.

Chicago starter James Baldwin, who entered with a 15-1 record when pitching indoors, allowed three runs and seven hits in seven innings.

Huff homered in the second and added an RBI single in the seventh that pulled the Devil Rays within 4-3. Vaughn hit his team-best 22nd homer in the fourth.

Devil Rays starter Bryan Rekar was hit by batted balls in the first by Ray Durham and the third by Jose Valentin. Rekar departed after the fourth with front right shoulder stiffness -- stemming from Valentin's ball -- after allowing four runs and eight hits.
