Bagwell's career-high 7 RBI carry Astros

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Even after driving in seven runs, Jeff Bagwell was not completely satisfied.

"I should have had more," Bagwell said. "The guys in front of me did a great job in getting on base."

Jeff Bagwell
Jeff Bagwell, left, is making the best of a lost Astros season. Bagwell's seven RBI Sunday tied the club record for RBI in a game.

Bagwell tied an Astros record for RBI in a game, hitting two homers Sunday to highlight Houston's 14-7 romp over the Philadelphia Phillies.

"It feels good to come out on the winning end of it and do well, but it was a bad game," Bagwell said.

Moises Alou homered twice as the Astros matched a club mark with six homers. Richard Hidalgo and Chris Truby also connected.

Bagwell went 4-for-5 and was hit by a pitch as he tied the Astros record for RBI shared by Rafael Ramirez (1989) and Pete Incaviglia (1992). Bagwell's previous career best was six RBI.

Bagwell hit a three-run homer in the fourth off Omar Daal (3-13) as the Astros opened a 9-5 lead, and hit his 33rd homer in the eighth against Chris Brock.

The Astros star also had a pair of RBI singles and a run-scoring grounder.

Bagwell has 21 multihomer games in his career and a season-high 12-game hitting streak.

"I don't mind watching him on SportsCenter, but I'd much rather see it from a distance," Phillies manager Terry Francona said. "I've always admired him. He's plays every game hard."

The Astros set a season-high with 19 hits. It was their third six-homer game of the year.

"Hitting the balls out of the park, that was the story," Houston manager Larry Dierker said. "All of their pitchers were having trouble and we made them pay for it.

"We've been able to do that a lot this year. We score enough runs to stay in contention, but our pitching and defense has given many of those big scoring games away."

Jose Cabrera, Wayne Franklin and Marc Valdes combined for five hitless innings in relief. Cabrera (1-2) pitched two hitless innings for the victory.

In the eighth, Hidalgo followed Bagwell with his 30th homer.

Houston tagged Daal for five runs in the first inning. Bagwell's RBI single was followed by two-run homers from Alou and Truby.

Alou hit a high, inside pitch into the left-field bleachers.

"When I came up again, (catcher Mike Lieberthal) was still talking about how Moises hit that pitch," Bagwell said. "He's the best hitter we've got. He can flat-out hit."

Alou hit his 20th homer, a solo shot off Brock, as the Astros extended their lead to 10-7 in the seventh. Alou, who has 15 multihomer games in his career, had three hits and drove in three runs.

Trailing 5-0, the Phillies got two runs in the bottom of the first off Brian Powell on Bobby Abreu's RBI triple and Lieberthal's RBI groundout. Bagwell drove in a run in the second with a grounder.

Philadelphia got within 6-5 on Marlon Anderson's first homer of the season, a three-run shot in the second.

The Phillies rallied again in the fourth as Rob Ducey hit an RBI double and eventually scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-7.

Daal surrendered 10 hits and nine runs in four innings. He is 0-6 with a 7.43 ERA in 22 career games against the Astros.

"(Pitching coach Galen Cisco) said coming out of the bullpen that Omar wasn't real crisp with anything," Francona said. "He was right."

Powell didn't fare much better as he lasted 2 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits.

Game notes
Anderson's homer was the first by a Phillies second baseman this season. Except for pitchers, every position in the majors has now produced at least one home run except Florida catchers. ... Phillies 3B Scott Rolen missed his fourth straight start with a strained left wrist. ... Phillies C Lieberthal left in the fifth inning with lower back spasms. ... Houston P Joe Slusarski had his first major league hit, a single in the fourth. ... Bagwell is 9-for-16 (.563) against Daal in his career. ... Houston won the season series, 5-4. The Astros have won eight of their last nine games at Veterans Stadium dating back to 1998.
