Daubach ties it in 9th, beats Angels in 11th

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

BOSTON (AP) -- Brian Daubach should get credit for a win and a save in the same game.

Daubach hit a two-run homer in the ninth to send the game into extra innings, then won it in the 11th with a two-run single as the Boston Red Sox beat the Anaheim Angels 7-6 Monday night.

Nomar Garciaparra jokes with former teammate Mo Vaughn between innings Monday night. Nomar and Boston had the last laugh in the 11th.

"I don't have a whole lot of hits lately, but I've gotten some huge ones," said Daubach, who had been 10-for-61 with three RBI this month but has now given the Red Sox four walkoff victories this season.

The Red Sox won in their last at-bat for the third time in eight games to go just ahead of Oakland in the AL wild-card race, .5372 to .5366.

"We don't do too many things easily around here," Daubach said. "Nothing comes easy for us, but we've pulled a couple games out."

Adam Kennedy, who hit a three-run homer to break a 2-2 tie in the sixth, gave Anaheim a 6-5 lead in the top of the 11th with a squeeze bunt. But the Red Sox loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half.

Shigetoshi Hasegawa got Jason Varitek to ground into a second-to-catcher-to-first double play that could have been a triple play if first baseman Mo Vaughn had noticed Manny Alexander was slow to leave first.

Daubach then reached out and blooped the ball to left. Orlando Palmiero ran in but couldn't catch it, and Troy O'Leary and Alexander scored to give Boston the victory.

"Bases loaded, no outs, and you almost get a triple play," said Angels right fielder Tim Salmon, who also noted that Anaheim got two bad calls earlier in the game that led manager Mike Scioscia to play under protest.

"Those plays would have been nice to go our way," Salmon said. "But we still were holding leads in the ninth and the 11th."

Derek Lowe (4-4) won despite allowing a run for the first time in 10 appearances. Hasegawa (8-3), who hadn't allowed a run in his previous 23 innings, was the loser.

Troy Glaus doubled to lead off the 11th, moved to third on Bengie Molina's sacrifice and Kennedy followed with a perfect squeeze, scoring Glaus without a throw.

Scott Schoeneweis took a five-hitter into the ninth inning before walking Varitek with two outs and giving up the tying homer to Daubach.

Boston took a 2-0 lead in the third when Varitek singled and scored on Darren Lewis' double. Lewis moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jose Offerman's single.

Boston loaded the bases thanks to a balk and two walks, but Schoeneweis got O'Leary to ground out, ending the third.

The Angels tied it when Kevin Stocker, Vaughn and Salmon singled with no outs in the fourth. Garret Anderson fouled out and Glaus walked to load the bases.

Molina hit a shallow fly ball that dropped next to a sliding Carl Everett in center field. Offerman picked up the ball and threw it to third, and though the ball beat Salmon to the bag, third baseman Lou Merloni was not standing on the base.

The problem was that third base umpire Jerry Meals had gone into the outfield to make a call on Everett's play. After a short delay, second base umpire Derryl Cousins called Salmon out.

Scioscia came out to argue, then returned to the dugout. He came out again to say that he was protesting the game.

"Derryl Cousins is telling me, 'It's my call.' He was grossly out of position and glanced and saw the ball beat the runner," Scioscia said. "Unfortunately, he didn't ask for help and it's a gross injustice for our chance to win the ballgame."

The Angels lost a run in the eighth when Salmon was called out at the plate after tagging on Molina's fly ball. Plate umpire Alfonso Marquez called Salmon out, but replays showed he slid under Everett's throw.

Game notes
Before the game, a plane circled the field pulling a banner that said "Welcome Back, Foxy Lady." The Providence, R.I., strip club was a favorite hangout for Vaughn when he was with Boston. ... The Red Sox signed second-round draft choice RHP Manny Delcarmen of Boston. ... Boston 2B Mike Lansing was out of the starting lineup, mired in a 4-for-31 slump. Nomar Garciaparra went 0-for-2 with three walks to bring his slump to 4-for-23 -- his worst since opening the season 4-for-22. ... Darin Erstad, who left Saturday's game against the Yankees with muscle spasms in his left rib cage, missed his second consecutive game. He leads the majors with 189 hits.
