Hammonds sparks Rockies' 2-1 victory

RECAP | BOX SCORE | GAME LOG

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Jeffrey Hammonds went 3-for-4, including a go-ahead RBI double in the sixth inning, as the Colorado Rockies edged the Philadelphia Phillies 2-1 Tuesday night.

The loss was the major league-high 16th for Philadelphia's Omar Daal (3-16).

Helton almost takes night off
PHILADELPHIA -- Colorado's Todd Helton, who leads the majors in batting, wasn't in the starting lineup Tuesday against the Phillies.

"Todd felt a slight twinge in his back after a swing last night," Colorado batting coach Clint Hurdle said. "It's nothing serious. He could have started and played the entire game with no problem. This just seemed like a good time to give him a night off."

Helton entered the game in the seventh inning, replacing starter Butch Huskey at first base. He flied out to left in his lone at-bat, dipping his average to .396.

The Rockies did say Helton's .176 average against Phillies starter Omar Daal also was a factor in him not starting.

Daal has been one of the few pitchers to get Helton out in his career. Helton is 3-for-17 with five strikeouts against him.

Brian Rose (2-2) pitched six strong innings and snapped a two-game losing streak.

Jose Jimenez pitched 2 1/3 hitless innings for his 17th save in 23 chances.

Colorado broke a 1-1 tie off Daal in the sixth inning. Hammonds looped a ground-rule double to right field, scoring Jeff Cirillo.

Cirillo got into scoring position behind some poor defense when he tried to stretch a hit into a double. Left fielder Pat Burrell's throw appeared to beat Cirillo to the bag, but second baseman Marlon Anderson couldn't come up with the one-hopper. The play was ruled a double.

Rose allowed one run on three hits -- all in the first three innings _ and retired the final seven batters he faced. He walked four and struck out six.

Rose's toughest jam came in the fourth when he threw 28 pitches and walked the bases loaded. He struck out Bobby Abreu to end the threat.

Daal yielded eight hits and two runs in seven innings. He struck out eight and walked one.

Colorado took a 1-0 lead in the third when Ben Petrick scored on Juan Pierre's RBI single.

The lead was short-lived as the Phillies tied the game in the bottom half of the third as Doug Glanville singled home Daal, who led off with a double.
