DENVER (AP) -- Todd Helton found himself thinking too much about hitting. Helton, attempting to become the first player to hit .400 over a full season since Ted Williams in 1941, went 1-for-4 with a home run in the Colorado Rockies' 5-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night. But his major league-leading average dropped to .393. "I was looking for pitches and guessing too much with him," Helton said of his battles with Milwaukee starter John Snyder. "The home run at-bat I said, `See it and hit it, and not worry about a particular pitch.' " Helton hit his 33rd home run in the fifth inning. "I got the changeup and that worked," Helton said. "Then I went back to the old looking for a pitch in my last at-bat and didn't get it. There is stupidity there." Snyder said Helton took advantage of his one mistake pitch. "The approach to Helton is to throw strikes and keep the ball down," Snyder said. "I left one ball up to him all night and he crushed it." Todd Hollandsworth had three hits, including a solo homer, as the Rockies won for the third straight time and sixth in seven games. "Helton doesn't normally get over-analytical," Colorado manager Buddy Bell said. "On any at-bat, good or bad, he will forget about it in his next at-bat." Astacio (12-8) gave up three runs and seven hits in 6 2/3 innings to win his third straight start. Gabe White pitched two innings for his fifth save. Geoff Jenkins homered in his third straight game and drove in two runs, and Richie Sexson added a solo home run for the Brewers. Snyder (3-7) fell to 0-5 in his last 12 starts. He gave up five runs and 10 hits in six innings. "This was one of those rare games at Coors Field where it is quick and well-pitched on both sides," Milwaukee manager Davey Lopes said. "Their pitching shut us down. We had a couple of opportunities and we didn't capitalize on them." James Mouton led off the game with a bunt single and Jenkins homered into the Milwaukee bullpen one out later. Hollandsworth hit his 10th homer in the second. The Rockies tied it 2-2 in the fourth, loading the bases with no outs on Jeff Cirillo's double, an infield single by Hollandsworth and a walk to Ben Petrick. Cirillo scored on Astacio's forceout. Snyder escaped further trouble by getting Juan Pierre to hit into a double play. Helton gave the Rockies a 3-2 lead with his home run, but Sexson tied it with a homer leading off the sixth. Colorado took advantage of two errors to score twice in the sixth. Astacio had an RBI single and Pierre had a safety squeeze bunt that made it 5-3. Milwaukee put runners on second and third with one out in the seventh, but Astacio struck out Mark Loretta and reliever Mike Myers fanned Jenkins. "Pedro struck out a guy who is tough to strike out in Loretta and that was a huge out," Bell said. "I was hoping to get out of the inning with one run out of the respect I have for Loretta, and Pedro made a great pitch to get Loretta to chase a breaking ball in the dirt." Game notesThe Brewers reinstated infielder Jose Hernandez from his rehab assignment and activated him from the 15-day DL. They also recalled infielder Lou Collier from Double-A Huntsville. ... Jenkins also homered in three straight games Aug. 18-20 at Montreal. ... Tyler Houston stole his first base since May 22, 1999. ... Colorado activated RHPs Kevin Jarvis and Jerry Dipoto from the DL. ... Larry Walker will take batting practice on Tuesday and Thursday and Bell will decide afterwards whether to activate him. ...
