GAME LOG
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- It would have been a better birthday if San
Francisco shortstop Rich Aurilia didn't leave the bases loaded in
the first inning. Still, that three-run home run in the sixth all but made up for it.
"That's the great part of this game -- things are eventually
going to even out," he said.
Aurilia, who turned 29 on Saturday, hit his second three-run
homer in as many games as the Giants routed the Chicago Cubs 13-2.
J.T. Snow added a two-run double in a seven-run sixth and Jeff
Kent had a two-run homer in the seventh for the Giants'
fourth-straight win.
Barry Bonds hit an RBI single and five Giants scored on
bases-loaded walks. Shawn Estes (13-4) allowed two runs on six hits
in six innings. He struck out three and walked two.
"We gave them 11 walks and they had 10 hits. Five
bases-on-balls with the bases loaded is a first for me," Chicago
manager Don Baylor said.
An umpiring decision led to the early departure of Cubs starter
Ruben Quevedo (2-7). Quevedo walked five batters, including three
to score runs, in just 1 1-3 innings.
Quevedo had trouble from the start. Marvin Benard doubled, Bill
Mueller walked, and Bonds singled to load the bases in the first
inning. Kent struck out, but Quevedo walked Ellis Burks, scoring
Benard. Snow struck out, and Aurilia flied out to center to end the
inning.
In the second inning, Quevedo loaded the bases again for Bonds,
who hit an RBI single and reloaded the bases for Kent.
Kent walked, putting the Giants up 3-0. After a word with
Quevedo, Cubs pitching coach Oscar Acosta argued calls with home
plate umpire Scott Packard and was tossed from the game.
The ejection brought Baylor out of the dugout, and he also spoke
to Quevedo.
After Burks walked again, scoring another run, the umpires met
on the field and decided that Baylor's trip to the mound was a
second visit to Quevedo, and he had to leave the game.
"I would hope they would use common logic, not what the book
says. I went out there for my pitching coach, not for the
pitcher," Baylor said.
Kyle Farnsworth replaced Quevedo and got the final two outs, but
the Giants emerged from the inning with a 4-0 lead.
Eric Young's double in the third inning scored Gary Matthews,
Jr., cutting the lead to 4-1. Ricky Gutierrez added an RBI single
off Estes in the sixth.
"I thought, 'Oh no. I hope those two runs don't come back to
haunt us," Giants manager Dusty Baker said.
He didn't need to worry. In the bottom of the sixth, Jamie
Arnold loaded the bases for Kent, who walked. Burks also walked,
scoring another run, before Snow's double off Felix Heredia put the
Giants up 8-2. Aurilia, who also hit a three-run homer in Friday's
7-2 victory over the Cubs, followed with his 16th home run of the
season.
Kent hit his 31st home run of the season, a two-run shot over
the left-field fence, off Heredia in the seventh inning.
Quevedo, 1-4 over his last five starts, allowed four runs on
four hits with five walks and two strikeouts.
Game notes The Giants activated reliever John Johnstone from the
disabled list. He was put on the DL with lower back pain on July
20. ... Snow needs one more hit for 1,000 career. ... Cubs second
baseman Young has an eight-game hitting streak. ... Estes, who
singled in the first inning, has hit safely in 12 of 25 starts. ...
Kent has 462 RBIs over a four-year stretch, the second-highest RBI
total among second basemen in that span. Rogers Hornsby leads the
list with 472.
