GAME LOG
CINCINNATI (AP) -- Geoff Jenkins says the Milwaukee Brewers finally have found a groove. Unfortunately, they've already been eliminated. "We've been playing a lot better lately. We haven't been getting blown out," he said after homering Thursday night in a 6-4 win over the Cincinnati Reds. "We've just needed another run here and there." Lou Collier also homered for the Brewers, who have won six of seven against the Reds this season. "It's funny, we haven't got the superb pitching we have against other teams," Reds manager Jack McKeon said. "This club is the only one we do that against." Collier, whose only previous homer this season had been for Double-A Huntsville, hit a solo shot in the fourth inning off Ron Villone (9-10). After Mark Loretta singled, Jenkins followed with a two-run homer for a 6-2 lead. "I was just trying to hit the ball hard," said Collier, hitting .333 in nine games since being called up Aug. 31. "I'm not a home-run hitter, but I feel I have to potential to hit some out." Jimmy Haynes (12-12) gave up solo home runs to Pokey Reese in the second inning and Sean Casey in the fifth. Haynes allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. Curtis Leskanic pitched the ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances. The Reds took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Dmitri Young. Milwaukee answered with three runs in the second. Jeromy Burnitz and Ron Belliard hit consecutive one-out singles, and Raul Casanova walked to load the bases. Villone then walked Haynes, who was batting .127, scoring Burnitz. Collier's sacrifice fly scored Belliard, and Loretta doubled in Casanova. Villone allowed six runs on seven hits in four innings. "The control was there in the bullpen," Villone said. "But I went out there and got out of sync real fast. First it was one part, then another. If I could explain it, I probably could have fixed it." Cincinnati made it 3-2 on Reese's 12th homer of the season. The Reds added a run in the fifth on Casey's 15th homer and a run in the sixth on Juan Castro's RBI single. Casey couldn't explain why the Reds are 1-6 against the Brewers. "We've been having a tough time with them for the past few years," he said. "They're a pretty good ballclub. I can't put my finger on why they're not winning more games. Against us, they're like the '27 Yankees." Game notesTwo Brewers outfielders have double-digit assists. Jenkins has 12 and Burnitz has 10. ... Marquis Grissom did not play Thursday after becoming the 65th player to reach 400 stolen bases by stealing second in Milwaukee's 4-1 loss to the New York Mets. He's sixth among active players in stolen bases. ... Reds executives Bill Doran and Tim Naehring are swapping jobs. Naehring becomes director of player development and Doran will be a special assistant to general manager Jim Bowden. ... Ken Griffey Jr., who has missed the last three games since partially tearing his left hamstring Monday night, donated $10,000 worth of school supplies to the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Cincinnati. The commissioner's office gave $1,000 and the School, Home and Office Products Association added $5,000. ... Smoke billowed from under an auxiliary press box as the game started, but play was not affected. Stadium officials said some boxes caught fire near a concession area, but the fire was quickly extinguished. | ALSO SEE Baseball Scoreboard Milwaukee Clubhouse Cincinnati Clubhouse RECAPS Boston 7 Cleveland 4
