KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) _ Mike Sweeney extended a team record with his 136th RBI and closed within two of the 200-hit plateau as the Kansas City Royals beat the Anaheim Angels 5-1 Tuesday night.

Sweeney, Joe Randa and Carlos Beltran hit RBI singles in a three-run third inning for Kansas City, which avoided dropping to a season-worst 13 games under .500.

Sweeney scored his 100th run on Randa's single. Beltran added an RBI single in the eighth off reliever Lou Pote for a 5-1 lead.

Jorge Fabregas made it 4-1 in the seventh when he singled and scored on a wild pitch by starter Ramon Ortiz.

Blake Stein (7-4) gave up three hits and struck out eight in eight innings. He walked three batters in the first three innings but only one more after that, improving to 6-1 with three no-decisions since Aug. 2.

Ortiz (6-6) gave up seven hits and four runs in seven innings. He struck out five and walked three

Stein didn't give up a hit until Garrett Anderson homered with one out in the fourth to cut Kansas City's lead to 3-1.

The only other hits against Stein came in the fifth, when Benji Gil's line drive ticked off the glove of leaping second baseman Carlos Febles, and in the seventh, when left fielder Mark Quinn just missed a sliding catch on a soft liner from pinch-hitter Orlando Palmeiro.

Sweeney is trying to become the fifth Kansas City player to record 200 hits in a season. Teammate Johnny Damon has already passed that mark with 201; the Royals have never had two players do it in the same season.

Notes: Anderson leads the Angels with six homers and 12 RBIs against Kansas City. ... Catcher Bengie Molina was a late scratch from the Angels lineup. He was replaced by Matt Walbeck. Molina left Sunday's game against Minnesota with tightness in his left thigh. ... Kansas City has more wins (230) against Anaheim than against any other opponent. ... Anaheim RHP Tim Belcher will begin his three-game suspension on Friday. Belcher argued with and bumped an umpire in a game against Seattle on June 27. The suspension was upheld on July 19 but stayed pending Belcher's return from the disabled list on Sept. 7.
