WHO TEAMS THE SCOOP
Rick Reed
Rick Reed
Leave Minnesota or stay put? Feb. 20: Reed is in Twins camp, but has not rescinded his trade request. Both Reed and his agent, Phil Tannenbaum, have said they're willing to be flexible with the last three years of Reed's contract, which calls for him to receive $7 million in 2002 and $8 million in 2003 with an $8 million team option for 2004 that becomes guaranteed if he meets an innings pitched requirement. Twins GM Terry Ryan has so far declined to guarantee the final year of Reed's contract. If Reed doesn't get traded by March 15 and does not rescind his trade request, he will become a free agent.

WHO TEAMS THE SCOOP
David Cone
David Cone
Retiring? Yankees
Feb. 20: Cone continues to sit at home in Tampa, Fla. waiting for a team to call and invite him to spring training. And though that call may never come, the Yankees are the one team which may at one point bring the veteran right-hander to camp. "We are pretty loaded up with pitching, but I don't rule out anything," Yankees owner George Steinbrenner told the New York Post. "I keep close to (Cone) through (Yankees adviser) Billy (Connors), asking him what he's doing. I don't bear any ill will that he went to Boston and did that to us. I don't rule anything out." Cone won four World Series titles while pitching for the Yankees.

WHO TEAMS THE SCOOP
Devon White
Devon White
Retiring? Feb. 14: White's agent told Bloomberg's Jerry Crasnick that the free-agent outfielder is leaning towards retirement. "He's turned down some pretty good stuff," Eric Goldschmidt said. "If the right situation doesn't come about in the next 10 days, he would retire and not have any regrets at all." Goldschmidt said the Yankees are among the teams that had expressed interest in White, who hit .277 with a .343 on-base and .459 slugging percentage with the Brewers last year.

WHO TEAMS THE SCOOP
Jeff Shaw
Jeff Shaw
Retiring? Reds
Feb. 12: Negotiations have begun again between the Reds and Shaw as the two sides continue to try to reach an agreement. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds offered Shaw a deal believed to be worth $300,000 for the 2002 season and $3 million for 2003. Shaw's agent, Joe Bick, countered with another offer that Reds GM Jim Bowden turned down. It's believed the two sides will continue to try to work out a deal. "We hope there's still a chance," Reds assistant GM Doc Rodgers said. "There's too many positive things about it to have it not get done." Shaw has insisted the Reds are the only team he is willing to play for as he wants to remain close to his home in Washington Court House, Ohio. There is also a possibility that Shaw may decide to retire.

WHO TEAMS THE SCOOP
Rey Sanchez
Rey Sanchez
Red Sox
Angels
Dodgers
Feb. 9: The Red Sox have Jose Offerman, Quilvio Veras and Carlos Baerga (both invited to camp) as second-base candidates. But the Sox would really like to sign the slick-fielding Sanchez to play second base and it very well could happen before spring training starts. The Angels could think about moving David Eckstein to second and if the Dodgers want more seasoning for Cesar Izturis, Sanchez could head west.
