Ashby hints he won't sign extension

PHILADELPHIA -- Andy Ashby is hinting strongly that he won't sign a contract extension with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Ashby, who could be a free agent at the end of the season, told reporters he and general manager Ed Wade have talked about the possibility of a trade before the July 31 trading deadline.

Ashby, a two-time All-Star, was acquired in the off-season from San Diego to complement to Curt Schilling and lead the Phillies into playoff contention. But he has had a rough start, going 2-6 with a 5.86 ERA in 12 starts.

Ashby is 2-12 lifetime at Veteran's Stadium.

"This is a tough place to play, I'm not going to deny that. It's especially tough when you're scuffling. It's frustrating when you put everything on the line and still get booed," Ashby said late Monday night.

Ashby's agent, Adam Katz, said his client was leaning toward testing the free agent market, making it likely that the Phillies would try to move him before July 31.

Even though Ashby has been a disappointment, Wade said the Phils could still do well in a trade.

"If a team has a quality pitcher available, I'm sure there would be multiple bidders," Wade said. "If indeed this gets to that point, I know for a fact multiple clubs would have interest, and do have interest right now."
