NEW YORK -- Joe Torre's reaction to news the Yankees had acquired slugger Jose Canseco was surprise. George Steinbrenner's reaction to his manager's sentiments was anger. New York Newsday reported in its Wednesday editions that Steinbrenner was incensed at Torre for the disapproval he showed over the acquisition of Canseco on Monday. According to the report, Steinbrenner released a prepared statement directing his anger toward Torre, who has enjoyed a peaceful relationship with the Yankees owner in his five years as manager. "I want to make it very clear that I support the decision of (general manager) Brian Cashman 100 percent and I'm surprised that anyone would be surprised by his aggressiveness," Steinbrenner's statement read. "I know we've made some decisions and choices in the past that have been criticized, but they've worked out. Jose Canseco can be a big contributor for us." The statement apparently was in response to Torre's remarks Monday after learning of the Canseco deal: "I'm a little stunned. I'm not surprised very often, but I am this time." In response to Steinbrenner's release, Torre told Newsday, "Yeah, I think we all support Brian Cashman." When asked if he interpreted the statement as a shot at him, Torre said, "If it is, I can't help it. He's the boss, and I respect the fact that he's the boss. He can pretty much do anything he wants." Torre must figure out a way to squeeze Canseco into the Yankees' lineup. The left field/DH slot already includes David Justice, Glenallen Hill, Luis Polonia and Ryan Thompson. |
