Torre's contract expires after this season

NEW YORK – Refreshed from his yearly Hawaiian vacation, Yankees skipper Joe Torre told the New York Times he'd like to continue managing beyond this season, after his current contract expires.

"How much longer will I continue?" Torre said. "I anticipate I'll want to go on beyond this year."

In 1998, Torre and George Steinbrenner agreed to a two-year extension for the 2000 and 2001 seasons. But after he was diagnosed with cancer in 1999 and treatment continued into the early part of the 2000 season, many thought Torre would call it quits after his contract ran out.

"I always see how I feel when I come back from Hawaii," Torre told the New York Times, "and if the idea of going back to spring training and starting all over again is not exciting for me, I have to figure it's just about over with. But I am excited with it."

According to the report, which appeared in Friday's edition of the Times, Torre said he had spoken with Steinbrenner about his feelings, but that he and "The Boss" have not had a chance to meet. "I guess when we're in Florida, we'll sit down and talk," said Torre, who will go to Tampa next week for the opening of the team's training camp.

The well-respected Torre, 60, has managed the Yankees for five seasons. The team has won four championships in that time, and have a regular-season record of 487-322 in his tenure, tying him with Casey Stengel for most victories after five years as a Yankees manager.

"He's definitely had an impact," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "I don't think we get to where we get without all the pieces every year that contribute, and Joe is certainly one of those pieces."

Torre will make $3 million this season under his current deal, and Steinbrenner will ultimately have final say as to whether Torre returns after 2001.
