Twelfth overall pick agrees to contract

SportsTicker

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- The Anaheim Angels have come to terms with top draft selection Joe Saunders, the team announced Wednesday.

Saunders, a left-handed pitcher from Virginia Tech, was the 12th overall selection by Anaheim in the first round on Tuesday. Saunders was a first team All-Big East selection after going 9-2 with a 2.86 earned-run average and 102 strikeouts in 97 2/3 innings.

"I'm pleased we were able to agree to terms with Joe so quickly and to know that his development toward the major leagues will start immediately," Angels director of scouting Donny Rowland said. "We're excited about his future and the fact that he is now part of the Angels' family."

Saunders was drafted previously by Philadelphia in 1999 in the fifth round but opted to attend college.

Terms of the contract were not announced, per club policy.
