ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Game 7 of the World Series is the last on Jeff Kent's current contract with the San Francisco Giants.
Giants owner Peter Magowan said Saturday that he's willing to let Kent see what he's worth on the open market, while keeping open the possibility of re-signing him. "I have no idea what the demand for him might turn out to be in an industry that lost $800 million this year," said Magowan, who was quoted in the Los Angeles Times. "I believe there are going to be some adjustments next year. "It's up to Jeff. If he wants to seek his fortune elsewhere, it's a free country. There's not much we can do about it if he doesn't want to be here. These are things we have to find out pretty soon." Magowan also must re-sign general manager Brian Sabean and manager Dusty Baker. Barry Bonds, who got into a dugout fight with Kent earlier this season, has said that signing Kent should be a priority for the Giants. According to the Times, if Kent leaves San Francisco, one team Magowan doesn't want Kent to sign with is Los Angeles. "I'd hate to see him in a Dodger uniform," Magowan said. "I don't think he'd look very good in a Dodger uniform, from my perspective. Of course, they might have a very different perspective." |
