Stephenson forced out by stiff elbow
Associated Press
ATLANTA -- St. Louis pitcher Garrett Stephenson, bothered by
tendinitis in his right elbow, left Game 3 of the NL Division
Series against the Atlanta Braves in the fourth inning Saturday.
Stephenson experienced stiffness after Reggie Sanders fouled off
a pitch with two outs. First baseman Will Clark walked over to the
mound and quickly pointed toward the dugout.
Manager Tony La Russa talked briefly with his starter before
signaling to Britt Reames in the bullpen.
Stephenson, a career-best 16-9 during the regular season,
pitched in pain over the final month. He even skipped a start to
give his ailing elbow some extra rest before the playoffs.
Obviously upset, Stephenson slammed down his hat and glove in
the dugout, then buried his head in his hands before going to the
clubhouse.
Reames struck out Sanders to end the fourth with the Cardinals
leading 3-1. Stephenson allowed three hits and a run, with two
walks and two strikeouts.
