Reuters NEW YORK -- A tattered and torn U.S. flag recovered from the World Trade Center flew over Yankee Stadium on Tuesday as baseball's fall classic steeped itself in reminders of the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center.
The flag with 12 stars missing and torn in various places was found covered in ash at the disaster site and was believed to have flown in the upper floors of the twin towers, the Yankees said in a statement.
The flag was just one of many reminders of the attacks in New York that left over 4,000 dead.
Before the game, with both teams on the field and the fans standing on their feet, the stadium paused for a moment of silence to remember the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks on New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
President Bush wore a New York Fire Department pullover emblazoned with his name and the Yankees wore the hats of the various rescue group who took part in rescue and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center "ground zero" site.
The attacks also weighed heavily on the minds of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who immediately after arriving in New York on Monday, visited ground zero to share handshakes, hugs and autographs with the people working in the rubble that once was the twin towers. |
